Durga Puja gift: Bangladesh interim government to export 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to Bengal

This decision is same as betrayal with the Shaheed. I'm starting to believe they gave their lieve for nothing.

Calm down. It was foreign ministry that made the request to reassess.

Who ever request is need to be hang in public. No room for compromise when comes to Indian. That country want us dead.

I believe only if this administration falls will a true revolutionary government come into being to uphold the ideals of the August 5 revolution and honor the sacrifice of the shaheeds ...

BD is behaving and acting like how silly Indian state governments act... Drama drama, just get on with your revolution stop looking for a scape goat for all your failures.. and embrace market systems if you really want to develop

Imagine making fish an issue in domestic and international geopolitics….

East and west bengal have deep cultural ties, and both love fish, whatever was said during the tumult was hyperbole for political manipulation.

In the end the bongos love each other too much to spoil it over traditional food.

A nice gift for the biggest religious and cultural event from one brother to another, as it should be.😄

Peace and prosperity to all.

Imagine their immaturity and audacity. It's them who is actually fishing for money(pun), and calling it as "Gift". Meanwhile Indian Hindu Bengalis are laughing in the comments at such exaggeration and overhype .

Such unforced errors and missteps will only give further ammo to the Awami League -

It's hard to rule isn't it? You're putting out dumpster fire every day you have no time to rule.

Hope those that were hoping for BD to radically change course with respect to BD-India relations now understand the reality of the geopolitical situation that BD faces itself.

Just look at a map and also note that Myanmar is a bunch of savage tribes constantly fighting each other that recently committed genocide on their Rohingya population, with over a million still in BD.

World Bank thinks that a BD-India FTA would raise current BD exports to India from 2 billion US dollars to something like 8 billion US dollars and this is one of the few markets where BD can really sell big in garments. India by 2030 could be an export market like USA and Germany are now.

There is what we wish to happen and what is reality and the two are not always aligned.

Regarding Hilsha - the problem isn't with trade. The problem was with Hasina administration allowing so much export that it caused a lack of supply in local markets. As a result it got out of reach for middle class people in Bangladesh. The problem in essence is prioritization of Indian customers over our own consumption needs.

I am all for exporting and making money provided we get a juicy margin on it, especially on a premium product like this. However, we have to ensure it doesn't jack up the prices too high in the local markets.

The other problem with prices going up in domestic market is syndicates. Now that export is allowed back, the syndicate will artificially inflate the price. Army officers with magistracy power can take out the syndicate like they had done in 2007-08. But using army officers is not a long term solution.

Apart from lobbying from foreign ministry and interest groups, another reason the govt may have taken into consideration to change their mind about export is to prevent smugglers from profiting off the ban. Just recently BGB caught a big shipment of smuggled Hilsha fish. Given the porous border, the ban will probably not be as effective in the long run, as smugglers will get the fish to Indian markets. It will be the BD govt losing out economically.

Everything that you have written is well understood but undermines the whole justification and moral edifice of the current Interim Government which only came into being as a byproduct of the #IndiaOut and #BoycottIndia campaign. The arguments you advanced here was exactly what many who were doubtful about these campaigns had said but were then harangued and labelled as Indian or Awami League agents.

When the IG takes contradictory positions like this it raises doubts about the sincerity of the Advisors and public trust and faith in the administration is lost. What is most glaringly obvious is that none of the Advisors are known to have in the past to be particularly anti-Indian and many are pro-Mujib so these sudden turn arounds do raise suspicions. In just a short time the IG has become unpopular and that will increase as it has lost a lot of credibility in the last few weeks and is dithering on the reform agenda which right now loos wholly superficial and cosmetic.

Bangladesh produced >~570,000 MT Hilsa last year and exported ~664 MT to India which netted them ~$7.7M

How much is that? 0.1% of total production.

Believe it or not, 0.1% is so much export that it caused supply shortage in the market.

Mamata Didi actually condemned the killings of students by Hasina. Kolkata people showed some support to the movement.
So it is not a bad idea to sell to these folks with stipulations that none goes to Modi and company !!

Here is my point:

If all is within normal business procedures and in the name of friendship then why Hasina received so much hate for doing the same thing? I see no difference between Hasina’s Bharat nawaz policy vs CG's bow down compromised policy.

Hypycracy is worst form of human character.
