In recent years, the Egyptian Navy has witnessed an unprecedented boom in development and modernization, which has enabled it to become the actual longitudinal arm of the state, capable of protecting and defending Egyptian interests on all strategic directions. Thanks to this development, the Navy can now reach any threat wherever it may be
The development and modernization of the Egyptian naval forces will not stop until the desired goal of transforming into a blue navy is achieved. The naval forces are still striving for a lot and aiming to add more qualitative capabilities in the coming years, including submarines with conventional propulsion (diesel/electricity) of the French Barracuda class. The ability to operate in deep waters, which Egypt seeks to obtain with 4 to 6 submarines with qualitative armament represented by French MCDN cruise missiles, according to what the Africa Intelligence website reported earlier.
Egypt also plans to acquire new AOR supply and fuel ships to support and enhance the Egyptian fleet’s logistical capabilities in line with the ongoing expansion of surface vessels. Egypt has already shown great interest in purchasing this type of ship to keep pace with the naval expansion plan, as Spanish sources (1) reported two years ago that the Navantia Group announced its desire to build two Cantabria-class naval supply warships for the Egyptian Navy.
Egypt also expressed its interest in acquiring landing ships and amphibious transport platforms of the “Atlas” class LPD class in 2021 (2), and this was preceded several years ago, specifically in 2015, by interest in contracting for Chinese ships of the same class, the Type-class. 071, which confirms that the naval forces have an ambitious plan that they are moving forward with steady steps towards possessing an integrated amphibious landing and attack force, the nucleus of which was the “Mistral” helicopter carrier.

It can also carry 40 tanks or 70 military vehicles, including 13 tanks and 450 soldiers, in addition to 4 landing vehicles.
The Egyptian Navy also strengthened its logistical capabilities through the acquisition of two logistical support, supply, and troop transport ships of the type Fort Austin and Fort Rosella. They were named “Segum Luxor” and “Segum Abu Simbel,” and they are considered among the largest naval vessels in the Egyptian naval fleet, with a total displacement of 23. One thousand tons.
Every ship can carry more than 3,500 tons of supplies, ammunition, and solid supplies, in addition to the space allocated for transporting soldiers, which makes it an essential element for providing logistical support to the fleet and supporting the operations of transporting forces and deploying them anywhere around the world thanks to the operational range of 23,000 km at a speed of 20 knots.
Egypt also worked to modernize and develop its fleet of obsolete naval vessels, and began by developing the American “Perry Class” frigate Alexandria, by equipping it with the advanced detection radar, model SMART-S Mk2, as well as the Tacticos battle management command system, to be the nucleus for developing the rest of the pieces of this model.

Also, the Egyptian Navy was keen to strengthen the supply and transport fleet by adding a new ship of the Roll on/Roll off category to the fleet of freedom ships, which currently includes 3 ships, used to transport soldiers, personnel, tanks and supplies, and can carry more than 10 thousand tons of Military equipment and supplies.

The Egyptian Navy’s development plan is not limited to large ships only, but it also extends to comprehensive development and modernization of the fleet of patrol boats, missiles, and coastal traffic vessels, starting with doubling the number of 28-meter Swift Ship patrol and traffic boats, which are built locally and contribute to securing the maritime borders.

The first: the bases of East Port Said, Berenice, and Jarjoub.
