It's about time, bro. How long have we been screaming at the EAF to go in this direction? It's a no-brainer. They had the excuse of procrastinating on getting these because of only viable platform in the EAF at the time was the F-16s which we all know would never be allowed to integrate Chinese equivalent to the AMRAAM. But since they aquired the MiG-29Ms, they should've moved on these a lot sooner IMO. I know it's easier said than done from the comforts of my laptop & mancave lol. But it's all constructive criticism not meant to chastise only.

Prior to the MIG-29M/M2, they might've been able to integrate them only onto the Block-52s because of obvious reasons. But again, the US would never allow Chinese weapons on their aircraft especially with the adaptor pylon the Chinese have developed to facilitate such integrations. Now they have 46 jets they can load up with these and add them to the R-73 (and possibly R37M) and make those things about as lethal as can possibly be. It would be a long time coming for the EAF to have such potency in the A2A spectrum.

If they continue to get resistance from Les Francois regarding the Meteor, then they might have to convince them to integrate the PL-15s on the Rafales! :D

Egypt: Interest in the SLC-18 radar
Egypt is eyeing Lockheed Martin's SPY-7 radar

This is crazy. I don't think many people realize how broad the radar availability is in the Egyptian military. They have so many powerful setups accross the country and looks like they're still adding to the field. Between early warning and surveillance and the slew tasked with the EAD through that new state of the art command & control headquarters, they seem to be taking this aspect more seriously than any of the others. I was going to open up a thread on just the radars because there is so much of it that it deserves its own thread. When I get some time I will certainly do that. It's really incredible what they have and operate and all the sectors involved and how they've centralized all the types under one command. Really great stuff.

Speaking of command & control, do we have any new information on the 2 Airbus A330 MRTT A2A refueling tankers? Is the order still ongoing or did it collapse?

And what about the new order of 30 Rafales? Any news on when they'll be arriving? I'm sure the other orders such as the 80 for the UAE and possibly 72 for Saudiya will put a time crunch on the measly 30 for the EAF lol. Let's hope not. And that they've straightened out any issues with the Meteor. Can't have that crap looming on us again, especially when the Emiratis & Saudis will certainly be getting theirs.

Let's hope it's that soon. That would be incredible and it should be that way considering the EAF was the front-runner in ordering as well as opening the proverbial door for Rafale export deals which exploded after Egypt's initial order. And to think we've been slighted with the Meteor ooof, enough to make you really angry lol.

BTW, huge breaking news in Russia - a couple of gunmen with AKs stormed a concert and have killed 40 people and injured over 100. The kinda thing that doesn't really happen in Russia!

And speaking of possible future military deals, saw this today on a twitter handle that belongs to an Egyptian military journalist. That's him checking out Le Terrible, the Barracuda!

Even the Type 209s we got stiffed on them, forcing us to go out and spend more on other better capable platforms such as this. Really incredible when you think of the adversity the Egyptian Armed Forces has had to endure when it comes to purchasing top lethal platforms.

One of the most prominent products that participated in the "EDEX 2023" exhibition was the missile launcher on a tracked armored vehicle, "Raad 200", which is the latest military product of the Ministry of Military Production and was displayed for the first time during the exhibition. It was designed and manufactured by Egyptian minds and hands inside one of the military production factories. It came as a result of the combined efforts of more than one subsidiary of military production companies and units to design and implement it. The exhibition also included participation in the exhibition with an upgraded version of the “Sina 200” armored vehicle, in addition to a variety of products typical of military production companies, the most important of which is “armored steel,” which is the basis of the vehicle industry. Armored.

Over the past years, the Ministry of Military Production, through its subsidiary companies and units, has participated in the implementation of many national projects to support comprehensive and sustainable development in the country by taking advantage of the surplus production capacities of the Ministry’s affiliated entities. Among these projects is the production of environmentally friendly means of transportation, where the manufacturing and assembly of a number of ( 100) chassis and delivered them to MCV within the framework of the frequency bus production project in cooperation with MCV for the benefit of the Ministry of Transport. The first phase of the project to convert a number of public transport buses to run on natural gas instead of diesel was implemented, as a number of (377) buses belonging to the Public Transport Authority were converted. In Cairo and Alexandria to operate on natural gas, out of a total number of (2265) buses. A number of (110) electric buses were also produced and supplied for the benefit of the Cairo and Alexandria governorates. These buses were produced under the name (SETIBUS) in cooperation between the Armored Production and Repair Factory (Military Factory 200) and the Transportation Industry Company. "MCV" aims to design and produce an Egyptian public transportation bus that runs on clean energy to stimulate the green economy.

Soon in Egypt: ThyssenKrupp is developing an adjustable unmanned underwater vehicle
ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems

1711344119272.jpeg
ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, is developing an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), according to a report by Janes website. A prototype of the Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) project is expected to be presented in 2024.

It is a modular UUV being developed for various applications such as deep sea exploration, scientific research and maritime security. Its modular design supports integration of third-party modules and other customizations to meet a range of mission requirements.

1711344564113.png

Both the core module and the mission module are enclosed in a hydrodynamic enclosure and designed as standard three- or six-meter containers that facilitate transportation and assembly. The report said that the basic units include the cutting, control and flight system, the fuel cell and propulsion system, in addition to the communications and control system.

The UUV is equipped with an air-independent fuel cell propulsion (AIP) system powered by hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries. According to TKMS, the AIP system enables the vehicle to perform long-endurance missions at depths of up to 5,000 metres.

It can be assumed that Egypt will own it in the coming years.

Egyptian military thinking is based on stages in the progression of armament...a thought that is somewhat similar to the idea of building the Egyptian missile wall for air defense in the war of attrition through leaps. Likewise, Egyptian armament in the recent period, specifically the last decade, is built on leaps and stages:

The first stage was to contract for the largest possible amount of available weapons from any camp, on the condition of speedy delivery. This was evident in the deals of the S-300 VM and MIG-29 M/M2 aircraft, as well as the French Rafale, French Mistral, and Fremm.

The second stage was to focus on purchasing military equipment, with the stipulation that some parts be manufactured in Egypt, including the French Gowind, as well as the German Meko and the Korean K9 Thunder cannon. We may also find the Italian Berghamini manufactured in Egypt, and perhaps also the Korean tank.

The third stage, which Egypt is pursuing, is to increase the TOT ratios as much as possible in any upcoming deals, including the submarine deals, as well as advanced training and ground support aircrafts.

The fourth stage, which is the last stage, is to rely on innovation, design, and local manufacturing under the name “Made in Egypt” for some of Egypt's equipment, but this stage requires time, great efforts, and major investments in the field of research to ultimately reach a pure Egyptian product that can be marketed abroad as well.

The SMX Ocean – a submarine based on the hull of the nuclear powered ‘Barracuda’ – the next generation SSN of the French Navy. The SMX Ocean will be fitted with a conventional propulsion system (SSK) with AIP technology.

1711347694213.jpeg

Developing this concept DCNS engineers focused on endurance and high sustained speed. The 4,700 tons SSK was designed for an endurance of 14,000 nautical miles (3 months autonomy) and a continuous transit speed of 14 knots for 1 week using the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system fitted with two fuel cells. The original nuclear propulsion system of the Barracuda design was also replaced with six diesel engines and three sets of Li Ion batteries.

Two thruster pods are deployable at the bottom of the hull will enable the submarine to manoeuver even while the main screw is not in action. The X rudder design is the same as on the Barracuda, also allowing increased manoeuvrability.

The SMX OCEAN SSK is fitted with one large modular Vertical Launch System tube that may vertically launch up to six MdCN cruise missiles. The submarine may also deploy F21 heavy torpedoes, SM39 Block 2 anti-ship missiles and a submarine launched version of the Mica missile for submarine self protection against aerial attack (A3SM Underwater Vehicle Version).

As for the SMX-Ocean's combat capabilities, they mirror or even exceed those of the most modern nuclear attack subs of a similar size, and even larger in some cases. The SMX-Ocean boats are designed to pack vertical launch tubes for land and surface attack long-range cruise missiles and even anti-aircraft missiles. This is all in addition to the standard forward firing torpedo tubes, although these too are capable of deploying anti-ship, anti-sub and even anti-air weaponry. In total, this innovative new SSK design will be able to pack an incredible amount of firepower, totaling 34 missiles, mines or torpedoes. In comparison, the Virginia Class SSNs, which are nearly double displacement, carry 39 weapons.

In addition to her bristling quiver full of missiles and torpedoes, full accommodations for a team of special forces frog men, including a lockout chamber and a 'garage' for swimmer delivery vehicles and/or a dorsally mounted midget submarines are part of the initial design.

A huge part of the SMX-Ocean concept includes the use of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) that can range out far from the submarine's location. There they can use active and passive sensors to help build a situational picture of the battlespace, all without putting their mothership at risk.

For instance, an UUV can be forward deployed and used tactically to search for other subs or mines using active sonar, or it can pave the way for a special operations team inserting deep into enemy territory. A sub-launched UAV will be able to provide targeting information for a standoff attack on an enemy flotilla, reconnoiter a suspect smuggling ship, or conduct over-watch for a special forces raid. All this can be done while the sub itself still remains hidden, dozens of miles away from the target in question.

A deployable 'virtual mast' system is also built into SMX-Ocean design. Basically, this is a buoy system fitted with electro-optical, signals intelligence, and even radar sensors, as well as data-link communications, that can be deployed while the sub is at great depth. Such a system can be used as a traditional periscope would, to visually survey the boat's surface surroundings and target craft if need be, or it could be used for communications, building an aerial and surface radar picture, or to relay information collected by a sub-launched UAV.

This whole "virtual mast" technology is so exciting because it largely alleviates the most vulnerable situation that an attack sub regularly puts itself in- breaking the surface of the water to prosecute an attack, communicate, or to simply see what is going on around it. The traditional periscope itself creates a radar return that many sub hunting radar systems are incredibly capable at detecting, and it is often a sub hunter's best clue as to a boat's location. In addition, all these technologies, including UUVs, UAVs and virtual masts are all expendable, as they can be abandoned on command or destroyed by the enemy without a major loss of the submarine they are supporting. Simply put, it is a much better deal losing a $2M UUV instead of a $1B+ submarine, not even counting the cost in human life.

The SMX-Ocean is a very enticing product for countries that do not have nuclear submarine capabilities but sure would love some without the cost or infrastructure hassle associated with them.

In the end, the more near-silent subs in the water doing reconnaissance, patrols, and supporting special operations the better, regardless of how they are powered.

* It is highly possible this is the submarine Egypt is negotiating for with Naval Group..
