Here in the UK, BYD seem to have a better reputation, whereas Polestar is considered to have reliability issues, and same with Geely. As to whether that is because for the UK BYD has decided to take a different approach to "quality" for the UK market than the Geely family has, or if it is from better marketing is unknown.

The resulting price markup does not translate into profit for the Chinese manufacturers; instead, it is captured by local governments and dealerships.

For electric vehicles (EVs), the battery pack accounts for a significant portion of the total cost, yet the pack itself is a consumable item. By the time an EV reaches the end of its service life—whether measured by mileage or years—the recovery value of the battery pack is minimal; recycling is driven primarily by environmental considerations.
Consequently, the residual value of used EVs is very low, and the rate of vehicle depreciation is steep. In contrast, internal combustion engine vehicles tend to depreciate at a much more favorable rate.
However, some manufacturers in China have begun promoting a sales model that decouples the EV from the battery pack. Under this arrangement, the purchase price of the vehicle excludes the battery; instead, owners can lease the battery or subscribe to a battery-swapping service. Ownership of the battery pack remains with the leasing company or the manufacturer. These providers establish networks of stations offering fully charged batteries that can be quickly swapped in at any time.
This model is still in the exploratory stage. A major challenge is that individual manufacturers lack the capacity to build a sufficiently dense network of battery-swapping stations, and battery packs from different manufacturers are not compatible with one another. Addressing this requires state intervention to standardize battery specifications and ensure interoperability—yet the Chinese government is currently taking a "wait-and-see" approach.
