By Tahir Ali | Gwadar ProMar 15, 2024

THARPARKAR - Engro Powergen Thar (EPTL) has achieved a significant safety milestone, surpassing 5 million safe man-hours. This accomplishment underscores the company’s unwavering commitment to safety, as announced by ETPL on Friday.

“This achievement underscores our unwavering dedication to fostering a safe and secure work environment with absence of any lost workday injuries,” reads an official statement.
“Safe man-hours” is a concept frequently employed in industrial and construction contexts to quantify work completed without any time lost due to accidents, injuries, or other safety-related incidents.

Engineer Aziz Ahmad, an electrical engineer specializing in electricity projects, explained that man-hours represent the total hours worked by employees or contractors without any recordable incidents.

Mr. Aziz told Gwadar Pro that safe man-hours serve as a crucial metric for evaluating workplace safety performance, indicating the effectiveness of safety practices and the establishment of a safe working environment.

EPTL was formed in 2014 to set up a 2x330MW power project in Thar Block II, Sindh, Pakistan.

The company is a joint venture between Engro Powergen Ltd (EPL), China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), Habib Bank Ltd, and Liberty Mills Limited.

The project successfully achieved commercial operations on July 10, 2019.

EPTL’s power project is a pioneering project in generating electricity using indigenous lignite coal from the Tharparkar district. According to EPTL’s official website, it is the first Company to have demonstrated proof of concept and successfully produced up to 660MW of electricity linking it to the national grid.

K-Electric (KE) will include 640 megawatts of cheap, renewable electricity to its system in the next two years through solar and wind energy projects, which will lead to a notable decrease in the cost of production, said KE Chief Executive Officer Moonis Abdullah Alvi .

Responding to a query, Alvi stated that solar and wind energy projects were expected to receive investments of more than $400 million from 12 companies hailing from Europe, China and the Middle East.

These alternative energy projects will be installed in Balochistan’s cities of Hub, Uthal and Bela as well as Karachi’s Surjani Town area. With the use of cost-effective, renewable energy by the consumers, the overall electricity consumption will go down by 200 to 250MW.
