I would not feel personally aggrieved by the inference to the contrary. The vast majority of nations who profess democratic institutions and checks and balances and rule of law simply state these things for show. In reality, they are electoral autocracies, at best. Moreover, several of these nations "impose" representative democracy on developing nations as a means of control. We are often led to believe that autocracy is easily controlled by malevolent 3rd parties from afar - that is only true if the dictator plays ball (Saddam, Gaddafi, Noriega, Chavez, Castro, Maduro....etc etc). Meanwhile, democracy can be manipulated at a fraction of the cost.
One only needs to glance over the eastern border, or at USA/UK, to understand all the above. The oligarchs reign supreme in most "democracies". India, rather amateurishly, thinks it can nation build in Pakistan by backing the same Khan they used to call Taliban Khan hardly a year or so ago. Indians posting here do make me laugh - they think we are stupid and they themselves are the Bollywood heroes that the third world needs.
Then there's the one nation that actually tells it how it is - China, giving a big red middle finger to so called representative democracy and proud of it. Ancient Greece would be equally proud. One of the few things Khan was right about (without him really realising why he was right) was that the Chinese example is the one to follow.
Even a fake democracy works better because those same autocracy have to at least keep up appearances and thus provide some performance. Thats why the democracies are doing better. For example, the US is in reality run by the military industrial complex who in turn pay the politicians, but because its not a direct corporate government (yet) there is a lot of check and balance in their system.
I don't know who counts as the 'deep-state' of UK but I'm going to guess its also corporations and certain elite and yes, they have their House of Lords but they also have a House of Commons and councils where the common riff-raff are allowed to at least discuss their issues and enact policy.
India is doing far better than us at this point. I know enough Indian people and I know how their lifestyle has rapidly changed in their 2nd/3rd tier cities that you can't even pronounce. Again, their establishment is the Gujjews and the businesses but still, because the democratic element is there, a 'counter-weight' exists.
China works because they're all Han Chinese and one party. We are Punjabi/Baloch/Sindhi/Shia/Sunni/Molvi/Liberal/Urdu-Speaker/Muhajir/whatever etc. All functional and powerful countries are democracies. No democracy is 100% free and fair but the worst democracy is better than the best dictatorship.
Also, we cannot follow China since part of how their system works is that they're completely devoid of religion and they follow a hybrid communist/capitalist structure where the government still owns a lot of things. That is too radical a change for us. Our structure is based on UK government.
