Ford Motor Co.’s top executive says allowing Chinese automakers to sell their cars in the US would be “devastating” to American manufacturing.

“We should not let them into our country,” Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley said Monday during an appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends show. “Manufacturing is the heart and soul of our country and for us to lose that to those exports would be devastating to our country.”

“I sure hope we don’t allow them to come across the border,” Farley said of Canada’s Chinese cars. Keeping these vehicles out of America should have a “big impact” on upcoming negotiations to rework the trade deal between the US, Canada and Mexico, he added.

Ford Motor Co. is once again restructuring its electric vehicle business, following a strategy shift late last year that resulted in a $19.5 billion writedown and six months of sliding EV demand.

The company announced on Wednesday it is merging its Electric Vehicle, Digital and Design team with its global Industrial System.

The restructuring comes as Farley turns to Chinese EV makers, amid contradictory statements on their industry.

Just days after saying Chinese carmakers should be kept out of America, Farley said his company is looking to expand business ties to Chinese automakers.

Farley told Fox News on Monday that “we should keep them out of our country.”

On Wednesday, Farley seemed to try to walk back his tough words on China.

“We value our Chinese partners, they help us stay sharp and compete in many markets around the world,” Farley said. “We will continue to expand these partnerships.” He added that he had “no news” to announce.

Ford CEO Jim Farley says that to win the fight for EV buyers, he wants to test drive his Chinese rivals, not a Tesla.
In an interview on business podcast “Rapid Response,” Farley was asked why he drove a Xiaomi SU7 EV in 2024 rather than a Tesla to assess the threat.

“If you’re an American and you want us to beat the Chinese in the car business, you’re all going to want to pay attention, not necessarily to Tesla,” Farley replied. “Nothing against Tesla—they’ve been doing great—but they really don’t have an updated vehicle.”

Launched in March 2024, the Xiaomi SU7 is an electric sedan built by Xiaomi Auto, a subsidiary of Xiaomi Corporation, with production authorized through a partnership with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Priced starting around $6,000, the vehicle was designed to shake up the EV market and run on batteries sourced from other Chinese EV industry giants BYD and Contemporary Amperex Technology Company.

Currently, BYD is the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer by volume. Farley argued that beating China in the car business means looking past Tesla as BYD is the “best in the business,” citing their cost efficiency, supply chain, and manufacturing expertise. He also reiterated his longstanding view that China’s progress in automobiles is something to be both feared and respected.

During the interview, Farley also warned of the scale of China’s manufacturing. “The production capacity in China is so large, it could basically take care of the entire North America market,” Farley said.

“We said to the team, ‘You can do anything. We just want you to engineer the most affordable, most efficient electric vehicle on the planet better than BYD,” he said.

Ford Motor and Geely Auto are discussing a potential partnership to share heavier technology and manufacturing costs, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing eight people familiar with the matter.

Three of the people said the companies are discussing Geely using Ford's European factory space to produce vehicles for the European market.

Two people said discussions also covered a potential framework for sharing automotive technologies, including autonomous driving, according to Reuters.

Negotiations around European manufacturing are progressing more smoothly, two sources indicated. One source said Ford's plant in Valencia, Spain, would most likely be the facility under consideration.

Some sources revealed Ford sent a delegation to China this week to intensify talks. Previously, Geely executives and Ford leaders met in Michigan last week, Reuters reported.

Negotiations between Geely and Ford have been ongoing for months, according to the report.

Geely declined to comment. Ford said it regularly engages in discussions with numerous companies on various topics, sometimes leading to agreements and sometimes not, the report noted.

On February 1, the Financial Times reported that Ford had held talks with Xiaomi regarding EV cooperation, exploring the possibility of establishing a joint venture to produce EVs in the US. Both Ford and Xiaomi subsequently denied the report.

Geely is one of China's largest automakers. Geely Auto sold 3.02 million vehicles in 2025, marking a year-on-year increase of 38.96%, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

Geely Auto exported 419,465 vehicles in 2025, a 1.56% increase year-on-year.

On July 14 at an Axios event in Washington, DC, media reports state that Ford, who is the great-grandson of the carmaker's founder Henry Ford, said that Chinese automakers will one day break into the U.S. car market and automakers must be prepared for it.

Right now, national security restrictions along with 100% tariffs put on imported Chinese automaker vehicles have effectively kept their vehicle sales offshore. That tariff was first imposed by former President Joe Biden and kept intact by President Donald Trump.

“We have to go toe-to-toe with China,” Ford reportedly said Tuesday at the event as reported by the Wall Street Journal. “We can’t expect to keep them out forever, and we have to be able to beat them at their own game.”

The all-new Ford Transit City was unveiled in March as a purpose-built and affordable all-electric van option for budget-conscious commercial customers in markets including Europe, South America, and potentially Australia, to name just a few. The new Ford Transit City is underpinned by a dedicated platform from The Blue Oval's Chinese joint-venture partner, Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), and the van will also be built at the JMC plant in Nanchang. Now, production of the new EV van is officially underway.

Ford has announced that Transit City production has begun at the Jiangling Motors' Xiaolan Plant, and soon, 1,000 units of the new model will be loaded up ships and on their way to international markets. Orders banks opened up in the European market in the second quarter of 2026, and the first vehicles are expected to be delivered to local customers before the end of the year.



The Ford Transit City is offered in three configurations to meet a variety of needs - L1H1 van, a compact configuration ideal for tight urban areas with a payload of up to 1,085 kilograms, the higher-capacity L2H2 van with a payload of 1,275 kilograms, and the Chassis Cab, designed for various conversions.

Regardless of which Ford Transit City configuration fleets choose, all are offered with a single, comprehensive specification to help keep costs and complexity down. All come with a 56 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack offering a targeted range of up to 254 kilometers, coupled with a 110 kW front-mounted electric motor. In terms of charging, 11 kW AC chargers can take the van from 10-80 percent in around 4.5 hours, while 87 kW DC fast charging can do the same in roughly 33 minutes - or add 50 kilometers in 10 minutes.



The Ford Transit City gets a host of welcome standard features, including a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, keyless start, air conditioning, a heated driver's seat, a rear-view camera, and a one-pedal drive mode, coupled with an eight-year, 160,000 kilometer warranty for all the high-voltage components.
