Greek parliament approves military procurement programs

Greece’s parliamentary armament committee approved four military procurement programs for the Air Force and Navy on Thursday, following a briefing by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.

The programs include the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets, participation in the US Navy’s Constellation-class frigate program, procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for frigates, and engine inspections for two missile boats.

The Air Force will acquire twenty F-35 Block 4 fighter jets, known for their advanced stealth and combat capabilities, at a cost of 3.47 billion euros. This covers technical support, pilot and technician training, additional engines, and simulators to be based at the Andravida Air Base in the Peloponnese.

The Navy’s participation in the Constellation frigate program, estimated at €2 million, allows Greece to influence the design of these next-generation warships.

Additionally, the committee approved €40 million for four Camcopter S-100 UAVs for surveillance and reconnaissance missions on defence and intervention frigate (FDI) frigates.
Lastly, €16 million has been allocated for engine overhauls on the LASOS and KAVALOUDIS missile boats, ensuring their continued operational readiness.

These procurements await final approval from the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) before contracts are signed by the General Directorate for Defense Investments and Armaments.

Absolutely no initiative and no massive oil reserves like Iran :p Even trying to search and drill for oil inside our own EEZ is something that makes Turks mad. They threaten with war.

I don't believe this is a bad development from a Turkish perspective.

It is ironic that this deal will at the same time strengthen Türkiye's position in the upcoming negotiations with the US regarding the purchase of F-35s. It is worth mentioning that the Americans have no desire for Greek dominance in the Aegean Sea and they do not want Türkiye to "reign" as the supreme force controlling the whole area either.

Historically, Washington obeyed to the status quo which always have been a litte more favourable to the Turks given the countries size, background, geolocation, purchasing power etc.

Also, before anyone says something, Türkiye is no longer interested in buying simple F35s but purchasing a limited amount of F35B is in the cards IMO. Navalizing KAAN will take probably more than a decade after KAAN is already deployed and operational with TAF. Using a few F35B as stop gap is the way to go.

Additionally, deploying the fighter jets on an aircraft carrier is far more suitable for the United States. This would essentially negate their (fake) argument concerning the Russian S400 radar coverage. Conversely, this is the exact situation that the Greeks are aiming to avoid.

Time will tell.

Bro, even if you stumbled upon a gazillion barrels of crude oil, your government wouldn't bother putting that money into research and development projects anyways. I'm not even convinced they'd spend it on military gear, despite having all that extra cash coming in. Don't get me wrong. Everything I say goes both ways.

The importance of mentality and priorities often outweighs financial resources in many situations.

This is true for every nation, with Greece being a prime example because the country is well-known for being an underachiever despite having some of the most intelligent and capable scientists in all of Europe.

They've already offered to let you back in the F-35 club if you give the S-400s somewhere. Anywhere. Probably Ukraine :p

Yes,that's true. They always tried to maintain a balance, but they slightly favored Turkey.

That's why people are frustrated and small parties started gaining more ground the last few years. And after everything ND has done the last year, the Europarliament elections showed that people were displeased with the government. Like some journalists pointed out,New Democracy lost about 700,000 voters in the europarliament elections compared to the parliamentary elections last year. Still, there was a big part of the population abstained from voting. But yeah, everyone is tired of the same "centrist" politics. You know, repeating the same "we are with NATO,we are with EU principles,we are with our US allies,we go forward,we don't turn back,we want growth",while basically doing everything CONTRARY to what the people voted them for.

This is true for every nation, with Greece being a prime example because the country is well-known for being an underachiever despite having some of the most intelligent and capable scientists in all of Europe.
You can't believe how much the governments have been ignoring or undermining every good and innovative effort that appears for the defence sector. We have brilliant people,we used to have a long tradition in shipbuilding,in whatever, but then you have all these politicians and their interests not doing anything about it.
We had an indigenou AT weapon in the 80s....ignored. We made UAVs...eh who cares,no need to expand the program. We made an IFV...too expensive,no need,we'll buy 450 Marder from Germany(never actually bought them).

Bribes,bribes,bribes. Personal interests,short-sighted governments,idiotic politicians.
