AMMAN: At least six people were killed and 28 injured when gunmen opened fire during a funeral at a church ‌in ‌southern Jordan on Friday.

The attack took place at the busy Hammoud Church in Karak ‌governorate. Earlier reports said seven worshippers had been killed.

A spokesperson for the Public Security Directorate confirmed the number of casualties and said the attack was carried out by "unknown assailants." He said the investigation was proceeding rapidly.

Security forces deployed at the church and were pursuing the ‌suspects, Al-Mamlaka TV said. Some of the wounded were critically injured.

A witness told Al-Mamlaka that a vehicle arrived carrying the gunmen, who fired continuously for five minutes before fleeing the scene.

Between 150 and 200 people were inside and around the church at the time, the witness said, adding that most of the victims were aged between 50 and 70.

Security camera footage captured the moment the gunmen attacked the entrance to the church. Two of the attackers appeared to be using handguns while another was carrying a rifle and had his head covered.

Jordan's King Abdullah II vowed that the attack would be met with "the harshest retaliation."

"Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity," he said in a statement. "Every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation."

Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan chaired a meeting of Jordan's security council in Karak to discuss the response to the attack, a government spokesman said.

Karak is home to a significant Christian community in the Muslim-majority kingdom.

Disgusting, it’s heart braking to see people being targeted at a place of worship.

We can thank Bush Jr. for starting this, and as Lindsay Graham has confirmed many times, this is a religious conflict; with actions of this nature, it was bound to happen one time or another.

The Western meddling in our affairs has lit the fuse in the region and across the world.

  • The Saudi leaders condemned the attack and expressed their sympathy to the families of the victims and the people of Jordan
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday sent cables of condolences to Jordan’s King Abdullah II following a terrorist attack on a church in the southern governorate of Karak that killed nine people and injured at least 40 others.

The Saudi leaders condemned the attack and expressed their sympathy to the families of the victims and the people of Jordan, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

King Salman denounced the shooting as a criminal act and extended his condolences to King Abdullah and the families of those killed, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman described the attack as a “cowardly criminal act” and conveyed his condolences to the Jordanian king, the country’s people and the victims' families.

The messages followed Friday’s shooting at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hamoud, where gunmen opened fire on mourners attending a funeral.

Jordanian authorities said on Saturday that the death toll had risen to nine after two people died from their injuries.

King Abdullah vowed a firm response, ordering security forces to pursue those responsible and conduct a comprehensive security review to prevent similar attacks.

Jordan declared three days of national mourning as authorities continued their search for the assailants.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in Jordan in recent years.

The shooting drew widespread international condemnation, with several Arab countries and the UN expressing solidarity with Jordan and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.

There will be no peace in this world till there is Israel and the banking sector is in the hands of Satanists.
