So India’s building a $7 billion, 120 kN jet engine with Safran? Great, just like the endless “world-class” Tejas variants, e.g. the “game-changing” naval variant, “ready by 2020” Arjun tanks, and the “coming soon” AMCA itself… since 2009. If history is any guide, that $7 billion jet engine will be ready just in time to power the AMCA’s grand unveiling… at the Air Force Museum gift shop.

India had three main options for developing its aircraft engine in partnership with other countries:
1. USA – Relying on the US for such a critical project is risky. Washington is unlikely to allow full transfer of technology, which would keep India dependent.
2. Russia – Easier access and cheaper collaboration are possible with Russia. However, when it comes to advanced engine technology, the EU and Western nations are generally one step ahead. Choosing Russia and others, may mean lower costs but also compromises in quality.
3. France – France represents the most balanced and practical option. If India can negotiate the right deal, it could gain access to one of the best engines available today, with far fewer political strings attached.
India and France already have a history of cooperation, including successful joint work on helicopter engines. Safran has committed to a complete transfer of technology for India’s AMCA program, giving Indian agencies access to advanced design expertise, manufacturing processes, and full intellectual property (IP) rights.

Police in India have arrested a man who recently alleged that he had been coerced into burying hundred of bodies of women who were raped before being murdered.
His startling claims had thrown the tiny religious town of Dharmasthala in the southern state of Karnataka into turmoil.
Home to the centuries-old temple to Manjunatha Swamy - an incarnation of Shiva from the Hindu holy trinity - the town attracts thousands of pilgrims daily and is central to the fabric of local people's lives.
A political row in the state resulted in the government setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to verify the man's allegations.
In the police complaint which the BBC has seen, the man said he worked as a cleaner at the temple from 1995 to 2014 - and alleged that he had been forced to bury the bodies of hundreds of girls and young women who were brutally raped and murdered.
He narrated five alleged incidents where he gave specifics, and said there were many others. Some of the victims, the man alleged, were minors.
