There is no spoon-feeding—India is gaining critical technology and experience from partners like Rolls-Royce.. The same approach is being followed for the helicopter engine with Safran, with HAL participating in its design, development and production of core components, and in this case - IPR will remain within the country, and HAL would be able to export it.

Ultimately, the goal is to build enough indigenous capability that India can eventually design and manufacture advanced aero-engines on its own,

So most likely – yes, anyway – India did acquire substantial aero-engine metallurgy knowledge through Kaveri engine – including indigenous superalloys, casting and high-temperature material technologies. 12 materials were indigenously developed and type-certified during Kaveri.

Read properly – The important point is that the plan is for a new 120+ kN engine, designed and developed in India, rather than adapting an existing Rolls-Royce engine.
