India - US Tariff and Relations | News + Updates

Since this is a Pakistani forum, I would like to understand what impact does it have on the Pakistani textile industry given that Indian textile will now have a lower tariff for both EU and the US ?
None or barely any
Honestly, I think our biggest issues are of our own making, so if textile or any other industry collapses, it'll be due to our own problems in terms of energy, taxation etc etc not due to FTA with another regional country
If we fix our own issues overtime we might just get our own FTA's someday.

There's no need to get worked up about this; just put your head down and put in the work of fixing our fundamental economic issues.
FTA's etc are the dog on a leash; you shouldn't focus on that. Focus on the man in control of that leash IE our fundamental issues
If we take care of that, we are big and important enough at global stage to have our own FTA with major countries.

According to Trump, India has agreed to purchase over $500bn worth of US goods.
US President Donald Trump announced that he agreed to a trade deal with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the US will lower tariffs on goods from India to 18% from 25%.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said India will reduce trade barriers to zero and will also stop buying Russian oil. An additional 25% tariff penalty imposed for Delhi's refusal to stop buying oil from Russia will be dropped.
The announcement comes less than a week after India and the European Union announced a landmark trade deal that capped nearly two decades of on-off talks.
Modi said on X that he is "delighted" that an agreement with the US has been reached.

In the post, Trump said that a morning phone call with Modi included discussions of trade and the Russia-Ukraine war.
"He agreed to stop buying Russian oil, and to buy much more oil from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela," Trump wrote.
Trump added that, at Modi's request, he immediately "agreed to a trade deal" that would see tariffs lowered and India's tariffs and non-tariff barriers reduced to zero.
Additionally, Trump said Modi committed to buying more than $500bn (£366bn) worth of American goods including energy, technology, agriculture and coal products.
The trade relationship between the US and India has been strained since the US imposed 50% tariffs on goods from India - the highest for a country in Asia - in August, including a 25% penalty linked to India's purchase of Russian oil.
A White House official confirmed to the BBC that the Russian oil-linked tariffs will be dropped as part of the agreement and other tariffs lowered to put the rate at 18%.
"Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement," Modi said on X.
"When two large economies and the world's largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation," he added.
Indian exports to the US plummeted sharply as Trump's tariffs took effect.
Officials in Delhi have been seeking partnerships with other countries also grappling with Trump's tariffs.
Last week, India and the European Union announced a free trade agreement that is set to lower taxes on nearly all goods between India and the bloc of 27 European states, as both sides seek to deepen ties in the face of increasing tensions with the US.
The agreement, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called "the mother of all deals", is poised to double EU exports to India by 2032, according to the EU.
Terry Haines, founder of Pangaea Policy, an analysis and forecasting firm, called the Washington-Delhi deal "an answer to those thinking the EU is flanking or gaining speed on the US on trade."
He said he expected US markets to "cheer" the agreement.
US stocks inched higher after Trump announced the trade deal with Delhi on Truth Social.

Yeah, Trump can wait until India forks out 500 billion for him 😅.
He should get in the line of so many other countries still awaiting india to buy things from them.
Putin still waiting payments from india for PAK-FA

What a heartbreaking news? How can Trump do this? 50% tariffs for just 5 months? And just 1% tariff advantage over the other countries?

I say, what a useless deal in the end. He could have done better. I guess, Modi didn’t beg enough.

Just open the first few pages of this thread and see what some friends had forecasted when additional tariffs were implemented. Sadly, they were not allowed to see the demise of the Indian economy and tariffs have been already reduced used.
Trump ne bahut hi galat kaam kiya. Kisi ka dil nahi todna chahiye tha. Kus aur wait kar leta to uska kya chala jaata.

Trump's desperate attempt to show a win ended in a cave-in, while India just waits it out. Well done.

What does the favorite Field Marshall have to show?

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday said he had agreed on a trade deal with India that slashes US tariffs on Indian goods to 18% from 50% in exchange for India lowering trade barriers, stopping its purchases of Russian oil and buying oil instead from the US and potentially Venezuela.

The new reciprocal tariff for India is 1% lower than for Pakistan. In August 2025, the US administration imposed a 19% reciprocal tariff on a wide range of Pakistani goods, lower than the initially proposed 29%.

“Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and, as per his request, effective immediately, we agreed to a Trade Deal between the United States and India, whereby the United States will charge a reduced Reciprocal Tariff, lowering it from 25% to 18%,” Trump said in a social media post following a call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

the only thing Trump favors is MONEY, POWER and PRAISE

i think you would be wrong on so many levels if you think he likes anyone other than himself

Oh, I know. I'm just poking the Beta Pak boys. He's always been a self-preservationist; it's one quality he can claim never to have discarded.

500 billion USD is huge
Trump will see the implementation, as SK get another tarrif after not doing what the deal was set

Agricultural is also now part of the deal, something India had tried to avoid....
