India was having a great time, by having the best of both worlds. Penetrating into US markets, doing business as usual and making billions in profit by reselling Russian oil to the West. India profited a lot from Russia-Ukraine war. Russia had to give huge discounts to india as Europe wasn't buying from Russia directly. India saw this as an opportunity and not just bought for its own use but bought in excess to even export back to Europe.
You just cannot fool the world for too long. That party had to end. It should have ended sooner. Sanctions on Russia are of no use, if India keeps buying russian oil in that large quantities. China buys russian oil, but China is a super power at the opposing side. India on other hand was a "friend" of west and ally / partner in alliances like QUAD etc.
Its high time india must be forced to pick a side. Trump is just doing that, so india can become a good boy and get back to being West's watch dog against China. (which eventually it will, indians will make a deal with trump).
