Quite a few SAM programs indeed. But each has it's own set of service/requirements so a common missile wouldn't work. Now its
QRSAM
MRSAM
LRSAM
SAMAR
Vshorad
Akash
VL-SRSAM
Maitri
kusha
Then the importa in Barak - S-400 and so on
All overlapping in performance parameters each running on their own project director and budget - very communist
-SAMAR was an IAF project, to utilize very large stocks of it's R-73E and R-27ER missiles as they were being retired from use on fighters. Basically, the lowest cost possible for what is a very viable SAM system.
-Maitri doesn't exist.
-VSHORAD is for replacing large numbers of Igla MANPADs.
-VL-SRSAM uses the Astra missile as the baseline for a quick reaction, point defence SAM for the Indian Navy. Range of around 50 km and can reach targets upto 15 km. It is replacing Barak 1 SAMs from IN warships.

-Akash is in service in fairly large numbers already, and has a range of 25-30 km.
-The IAF still has older Pechoras that it needs to replace. Akash NG with longer range will most likely take it's place. Akash NG range is around 70 km. Interestingly, Brazil is reportedly interested in the Akash NG. Pitched against a Chinese SAM.
- MR-SAM developed as part of a JV with IAI is basically the Barak-8, and is longer ranged, at 70-80 km and is in service with the Indian Air Force. Plans to raise 9 MR-SAM squadrons, with 24 firing units, or around 2000 missiles.
India deploys MR-SAM near Northwestern borders with Pakistan
- S-400's Indian equivalent is to be the Project Kusha SAM, which has only started development recently. Will take a long time to see service.
