Good post.
I have been saying on PDF for MANY Years: Pakistan is not particularly more corrupt or inefficient when compared with most poor countries, including the countries of the Subcontinent. But unfortunately, Pakistanis were led to believe by the Pakistani Establishment itself that some pious, incorruptible person would be like a magic wand to solve Pakistan's problems, including of corruption. While 'containing' Corruption to acceptable level would be good but a country has to be run with overall political 'wisdom' and the fundamental aspect of that is collective decision making, political accommodations, and continuity of policies. And to be a 'wise' leader would require a flexible personality who would not be driven by an insurmountable rigidity and ego. I am sure Pakistanis here know what I am saying in between words but without getting too explicit about it.
You sir, hit the nail right on the head ! Precisely that, our nation wants an easy solution out, continuing on their own ways and believing one or the other person will take care of it all.
Reminds me of something I read in a book from Mutansar Hussain Tarar, explains the crux of the problem, not his exact words but I'm writing it form memory:
"I was driving one day on the passenger side and the driver, an acquaintance of mine, was complaining nonstop about how corrupt the X politician and how corrupt the Y politician is. We came upon a red traffic light. The guy took a pause form his arguing, looked left, looked right, saw that the traffic warden was busy elsewhere .. and put his foot down and ran across the red signal light. Upon reaching the other end of the road, he once again continued his shouting form where he had left it, about how corrupt all the politicians are and how we need someone to eliminate the corruption" and that's when I (Mustanser Hussein) realized "Most of us are corrupt and we feel guilty about it deep inside, so we just throw the baggage on politicians/police/judges, while we those police/politicians/judges come from us and carry our own ethics tothe top. We take the easy way out by saying that either they are corrupt or they did not train us, and continue on our ways without feeling a bit of guilt ... its the easiest way to feel vindicated without changing ourselves"
That's the crux of the matter. In other societies, it is
the people are responsible and honest citizens and they naturally produce such leaders. Never the other way round. But our people do not want to change hence they keep on justifying that some leader will save them from themselves, while not changing themselves.
