  • 6 submarines will be built under Project 75 India initiative
  • Mazagon Dock partners with Germany's ThyssenKrupp for submarine construction
  • Submarines will feature Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems
In a major development, the Indian Navy has cleared the state-owned Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) to build six submarines with the projected cost upto Rs 60,000 crore. The decision follows the completion of trials for submarines under Project 75 India, according to defence sources.

The deal is crucial for India to counter the increasing influence of China and Pakistan in the Indian Ocean Region.

Which sub to be built in Mumbai? U-214?

So now its almost clear that U-214 is going to be a next submarine.... It will be built in Mazgaon giving the dockyard an excellent experience of building 2 top of the line western Diesel submarines...
Scorpean-U214 combo is also very deadly... Seems we are now going to have the most advanced SSK fleet in Asia or Japanese Koreans SSKs better?

U214 is a very capable submarine but declaring most advanced - it will be a harsh call.

Anyway - navy also approached for -

Indian Navy approaches government for two nuclear attack submarines

So did it go from an indigenous design to U-214 or am i confusing it with another initiative?

No, the plan for Project-75I was always to get a foreign design for 6 SSKs.

There is going to be another separate project for an indigenous SSK design. And another separate one for 2 indigenous SSNs to be followed by another 4 indigenous SSNs.

So that would mean some 8 disparate types in service each with their own logistics lime and training requirements?

That is called "Project-76"... Still in very primarily stage to develop indigenous diesel submarine.

scorpene - 9 (6+3) and U214 - (6) most likely will be the last imported submarines.

Kilo class submarines will be getting retired in coming decade.

As we understand - SSN submarine ( project 75 alfa) is on top perority due to increasing Chinese naval activities in Indian Ocean.

Glad to see the IN has given the approval after trials for the German submarines after completion of trials. Reminds me of how quickly they chose the Rafale M after trials.

Compared to the MRCA/MRFA that is interminable..

But there are steps to be undertaken as yet, including commercial negotiations, ToT negotiations, etc. It will take quite a while for all of that to be completed and the contract to be signed.

Probably a better idea to use the 214s in a longer ranges patrol role. Not like the Chinese patrols aren’t making noise that your Japanese Sosus cannot pick up hundreds of NM away and not like the west where it truly is a difficult sonar environment that helps mask even some noisy subs or slow trawling small craft.

Thanks to indian navy approached - we are able to succeed in more indigenous manufacturing to ship building.

IAF mosty love affairs with foreign items - it caused delayed of local projects due to their continuous changing requirements.

Since now - indian government is almost pushing hard to go for indian make products, slowly moving to the right direction

No.

The Kilo class SSKs will be gone before the indigenous SSKs are in production. The 4 German HDW Type 209 Shishumar class SSKs will also be on their way out by then.

That will leave the 6 Scorpene SSKs, 3 follow-on larger Scorpenes, 6 German (Type?) subs for the conventional sub fleet.

Nuclear sub fleet will be 2 indigenous SSNs followed by 4 improved indigenous SSNs. In addition there are the 2 SSBNs plus the 2 more to follow.
