Indian Navy News & Discussions

I said its confirm now that Arihant class was stretched to 5 boats from earlier 4 and S-5 expanded to 4 (some say 6, probably to replace oldest S-4 class) from 3 earlier planned.

Takes total to 9 SSBNs and 2 SSNs by end 2030s. But SSNs need to be prioritised now.
10 nuclear submarines and 4 aircraft Carriers by 2032

Taragiri' warship joins Navy fleet with BrahMos strike capability

Aridhaman has officially joined service... defense matrix video coming tomorrow.... congratulations to the nation...
The next one should come in around 2027-28. Then we'll go to the S5 program.

INS Taragiri was also commissioned today.

S5 is SSBN project and 2026-27 onwards IN will start building SSNs under Project-77 class. So, in between 2030-32 IN will be executing SSBN, SSN, SSK (Project-76 Indigenous) & SSK (Project-75I Imported) projects simultaneously.

It's good that India laid the groundwork for it's navy back in the 1980-90s.

We don't have the strongest nor the most advanced navy but it's practical for our needs which is limited to Indian Ocean. Most importantly making the Andaman and Nicobar islands an impenetrable fortress.

The Indian Navy has received Dunagiri, an indigenous stealth frigate built under Project 17A, from Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) in Kolkata, the Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

Delivered on March 30, the warship is the fifth vessel of the Nilgiri-class and the second to be built at GRSE. The induction comes as part of the Navy’s ongoing programme to bring in next-generation multi-mission frigates.

Named after the earlier INS Dunagiri, which served from 1977 to 2010, the new ship features upgrades in stealth, firepower, automation and survivability, officials said.

Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built using an integrated construction approach, the frigate represents an advance over the earlier Shivalik-class vessels.

The Project 17A ships are equipped with advanced weapon and sensor systems, including BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, MFSTAR radar and the MRSAM air defence system. They also carry a 76 mm gun, close-in weapon systems and anti-submarine warfare capabilities such as rockets and torpedoes, and are powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system.

The delivery of Dunagiri marks the fifth induction under Project 17A in the last 16 months. Officials said the construction period was reduced to 80 months, compared to 93 months for the lead ship.

I am not sure how credible IRDW is as s source

But they are saying that Indian Navy is looking to order 2 more S4 class Subs , which are to be armed with 24 Brahmos ER missiles in 3 x 8 configuration instead of 8 K4 missiles

Navy has achieved 90% indigenisation with S4* , so ordering more subs of same Design will be more cost effective rather than having an all new design for an SSN

If navy is looking to order 2 more SSBNs then instead of S4 they should try for 2 more S5s.... we will have 4 S4s and additional nos of S5 with more heavy fire power will make more sense.... then we can focus on our homemade SSKs and SSNs...

Ordering more nos of such second strike capable platforms shows India too is planning for future war with super powers like America or China.... more nos will obviously make sense as ASW capabilities are also evolving and being far dangerous.... in a war if God forbid we loose all SSBNs to ASW warfare by super powers then we loose our nuclear triad.... in this case more nos makes sense....
