BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes and warmly congratulates Indonesia on becoming a full member of BRICS, a foreign ministry spokesperson said Monday.

Brazil, as the BRICS chair this year, released a statement announcing that Indonesia has become a full member of BRICS, which received wide attention from the international community.

The spokesperson said Indonesia, as a major developing country and an important force in the Global South, highly recognizes the BRICS spirit and has taken an active part in "BRICS Plus" cooperation.

The spokesperson said Indonesia's official entry into BRICS serves the common interests of BRICS countries and the Global South, adding that "we believe that Indonesia will make active contribution to the development of BRICS."

The spokesperson said BRICS is a main platform for promoting solidarity and cooperation of the Global South and a major force driving the reform of the global governance system, and BRICS countries are always committed to multilateralism, fairness and justice, and common development. BRICS's latest addition follows the historic trend of the collective rise of the Global South.

China stands ready to work with Indonesia and other BRICS members to jointly build a more comprehensive, close, practical and inclusive partnership, advance the high-quality development of greater BRICS cooperation, and make greater contribution to building a community with a shared future for mankind, the spokesperson added. ■

Indonesia has started 2025 by becoming a full member of the BRICS bloc

Indonesia became the tenth full member of the international BRICS group of developing economies on Monday.

The announcement was made by Brazil, a founding member of the bloc and the holder of the rotating presidency for 2025.

"The Brazilian government welcomes Indonesia's entry into the BRICS," it said in a statement.

"With the largest population and economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other members a commitment to reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to deepening South-South cooperation."

Indonesia's candidacy was initially endorsed by BRICS leaders in August 2023, according to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

But the world's fourth-most populous nation opted to postpone its formal accession to the bloc until the formation of its newly-elected government.

To mark the event, the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Jakarta issed a statement saying: "This achievement shows Indonesia's increasingly active role in global issues and commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation to create a global structure that is more inclusive and fair."

What is the BRICS group?

The BRICS group is named after its original founder members in 2009: Brazil, Russia, India and China, plus South Africa, which joined a year later.

In 2024, the alliance expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates.

The bloc was conceived as a counterweight to the Group of Seven (G7) developed economies, made up of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

Prior to Indonesia's accession, the BRICS accounted for 46% of the world's population and 35% of global gross domestic product.

Saudi Arabia has been invited to join, but has not yet done so, while Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied to become members.

The most recent BRICS summit, the 16th such gathering, took place in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024 and was hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At the summit, member states discussed strengthening local currencies and boosting non-dollar transactions, attracting criticism from US President-elect Donald Trump who threatened BRICS countries with "100 percent tariffs."

This year's BRICS summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro in July.

Earlier this month, the Indonesian President’s Office confirmed that President Prabowo Subianto had accepted an invitation to be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in January. This would be the fourth time for an Indonesian president to attend the event as a chief guest, including in 2018 when India hosted all 10 leaders of the ASEAN countries as chief guests.

It was Indonesia’s first President Sukarno who was the chief guest of India’s first Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 1950. New Delhi’s choice of Sukarno as the chief guest reflected the geopolitical realities of the time. Sukarno was a close ally of India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and a fellow advocate of independence for Asian and African countries. The two were later co-founders of the Non-Aligned Movement.

The subsequent selection of guests for India’s Republic Day celebrations has been in tune with changes in India’s foreign policy priorities.

India has been seeking to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia. Increased engagement with Jakarta is expected to be beneficial in this regard. Prabowo’s visit to New Delhi will be critical in gauging his administration’s policy goals and identifying areas of mutual cooperation.

Defense cooperation, specifically defense technology and arms procurement, is a key area of interest to India. In recent years, there has been a significant uptick in India-Indonesia defense ties. In February 2023, INS Sindhukesari became the first Indian submarine to dock in Indonesia. More recently in April 2024, the first ever “India-Indonesia Defense Industry Exhibition-cum-Seminar” was organized in Jakarta, which saw the participation of 36 prominent Indian defense companies, including 12 Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSU or SOEs) and 25 private companies, alongside several Indonesian state-owned defense enterprises and private defense establishments. On a recent visit to Jakarta, Indian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi discussed opportunities for increasing defense cooperation. Jakarta reportedly showed interest in collaborating with India on defense technology, including on the BrahMos cruise missile.

For years now, India and Indonesia have been negotiating the sale of BrahMos missiles to Jakarta, with reports suggesting that both sides came very close to finalization of a deal in 2023.

Although Indonesia has significantly boosted investment in the acquisition of new weapons, which increased by nearly 28 percent in 2021 and by 69 percent in 2022, Jakarta has remained hesitant to purchase the BrahMos missiles. Despite being a more cost-effective option, Jakarta’s hesitation likely stems from possible U.S. sanctions under CAATSA, as the missiles are jointly produced with Russia. Although Washington has used the sanctions sparingly, theoretically it applies to both the makers of BrahMos and any of their customers. Therefore, Jakarta fears that it could be subjected to U.S. sanctions if it purchases BrahMos from India.

The Prabowo administration is reportedly keen to strengthen Indonesia’s military capabilities, and is expected to significantly increase defense spending in the coming years. With space opening up, India should push to finalize the BrahMos deal with Jakarta.

Importantly, Southeast Asian countries are looking to diversify their arms suppliers. New Delhi should use this opportune moment to push arms sales in the region beyond traditional partners in Southeast Asia, beginning with Indonesia.

2025 will be a crucial year for India-Indonesia trade ties as well. In 2019, India and Indonesia set an ambitious target of achieving $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2025, However, trade in fiscal year 2023-24 stood at only $26.69 billion. Although in 2023 Indonesia emerged as India’s largest trading partner in the ASEAN region, high tariff and non-tariff barriers were major constraints on India-Indonesia trade. Negotiations for the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) have been ongoing since 2011, but with limited progress. Concerted effort toward resuming dialogue is the need of the hour and Prabowo’s visit could be a good starting point for setting this in motion for the upcoming year.

According to Indian media reports, development of the Sabang port is likely to be discussed during Prabowo’s visit. In 2018, during a visit between Modi and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, India pledged assistance in the development of infrastructure on Sabang and both sides agreed to set up a task force to enhance connectivity between Andaman and Sabang.

The successful development of the Sabang port — located strategically at the northern tip of Sumatra — will give New Delhi easier access to the Malacca Strait and support short-sea shipping in the Bay of Bengal. It will also boost the Indian Navy’s ability to act as the first responder to non-traditional security challenges in the eastern Indian Ocean. Developing connectivity between Andaman and Aceh is crucial to unleash the economic potentials of both areas, which can become key transshipment hubs for container traffic passing from East and Southeast Asia.

In 2023, India and Indonesia completed a joint feasibility study on developing Sabang port, but overall progress on building the port has been slow. The same year, Adani Group was reportedly in talks with the Indonesian government to develop the port. The outcome or progress of the talks remains unclear; however, the global backlash against Adani Group’s overseas projects, following a U.S. indictment alleging bribery, casts a shadow over India’s plan to develop the port.

Despite these challenges, there is optimism over the future of India-Indonesia ties in both countries. Considering the current reality and the future potential of their relationship, the two nations must work toward a focused, sustained, and multi-sectoral effort to elevate their ties to a higher level.

Marco Rubio, Sugiono Talk about South China Sea over Phone

Jakarta. Newly sworn-in US President Donald Trump’s chief diplomat Marco Rubio had a phone call with Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono for talks about the South China Sea, among others, on Thursday.

The phone conversation took place just days after Rubio got picked to helm the US Department of State. According to US Department of State’s spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, the discussions revolved around the South China Sea, one of the world’s busiest trade routes that is also seeing contested territorial claims between Beijing and some ASEAN members.

“The two leaders discussed the importance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, including an exchange of views on maritime security in the South China Sea,” Bruce said.

Bruce said that the two countries also recognized how crucial US-Indonesia’s comprehensive strategic partnership is to a “secure and prosperous” Indo-Pacific region. They also pledged to deepen trade and investment ties in areas advantageous to both countries. As of writing, the Indonesian government has yet to issue a statement regarding Sugiono’s talks with Rubio.

Rubio, who is also the US first Latino secretary of state, is known for his hawkish stance on China. Just a week ago, Rubio warned that China would be the biggest threat to American prosperity in the 21st century. On his second day back in the White House, Trump had threatened a 10 percent duty on all Chinese imports starting next month after he accused Beijing of allowing the flow of opiate fentanyl into Mexico and Canada.

Indonesia is trying to strike a balance in its relations with the major powers US and China. President Prabowo Subianto repeatedly said that Indonesia would be a friend to all and an enemy to none under his presidency. But shortly after taking office in October, Indonesia announced that it would join the Russia and China-led BRICS bloc of emerging economies, and swiftly snagged a seat in the group almost three months later.

Prabowo also kicked off his first-ever foreign trip with a visit to Beijing to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The talks resulted in a joint statement that made headlines by stating that the two countries had reached a common understanding of overlapping claims over marine areas. Indonesia has denied that it had accepted China’s so-called “nine-dash line”. China has been using these lines to lay claims over 90 percent of the 3 million-square-kilometer South China Sea.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - French President Emmanuel Macron announced his plans to visit Indonesia in May 2025 during a meeting with Indonesia's Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid in Paris.

"I will... I will... I love your country," Macron told Hafid during their meeting at the sidelines of the AI Action Summit (AIAS) on Tuesday, Paris time, according to the ministry's written statement on Wednesday.

Macron's visit marks the first state visit by a French leader since the strategic partnership between Indonesia and France was established in 2011 when Prime Minister François Fillon met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta.

Hafid highlighted that Macron's visit will be a new milestone in Indonesia-France bilateral relations.

"President Macron's visit to Indonesia will strengthen our strategic cooperation in various sectors, including digital economy, artificial intelligence, defense, and green energy," the minister stated.

Since the signing of the bilateral strategic partnership in 2011, Indonesia and France have maintained strong cooperation in the trade, defense, and technology sectors.

Hence, Macron's visit to Indonesia is expected to open a new chapter in the strategic partnership, particularly in collective efforts to address global challenges in the digital era.

During his visit to Indonesia, Macron will meet with his Indonesian counterpart, Prabowo Subianto, and attend strategic agenda to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Minister Hafid is in the French capital to attend the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit (AIAS) on February 10-11, 2025.

I just spoke with the President of Indonesia, @Prabowo Subianto. We have decided to strengthen the relationship between our countries with ambitious and structuring projects.

This historic rapprochement that we are preparing will materialize during my state visit to Indonesia at the end of May. We aim to strengthen our ties in defence, economics, science and culture and to develop our academic exchanges.

France and Europe want to build the economy of tomorrow with Indonesia, by creating resilient value chains, particularly in the critical metals sector, and by supporting the energy transition.

Finally, together we share the same desire to promote peace and security in the Middle East and to end Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. We will work together towards the Gaza conference to be held in June. The future is built through strong partnerships, open trade and a shared vision.
