Different terrain, different time. Besides, last time I checked, both Afghanistan and Vietnam were invaded by the US and both wars lasted some 20 years. It wasn't a quick liberation.

Plus, occupying mainland Iran and our islands are completely different.

US has been doing land invasions on countries almost every decade.
I don't think there will be any problem for US planners to pursue their objectives via land invasion.

Just for some mental gymnastics:

US objectives:
1- Complete surrender of Nuclear Program to US
2- Zero iranian control over SoH.

Plan
1- Softening up Iranian military backbone through consistent yet extensive bombing campaign - pretty much achieved in 40-day compaign
2- Complete degradation of Iranian coastal foothold pushing iranian military to go further deep in mainland. - US is probably doing this right now.
3- Quick land invasion on port cities like Bandar Abas, Chahbahar,etc and extensive bombing compaign on infrastructure of Iran connecting it to regional countries to completely suffocate iranians economically - This will be the final nail in coffin.

US has the endurance of 10-20 years of occupying foreign countries but unlike Brits, they almost never succeed in making Other countries their colonies.
If Iran can endure this for a decade or two, it's their war to win.
