his is just posturing. There is no way in military science that the US can wrestle control of hormuz from iran. Simple logic. One side has to simply harrass ships, the other side needs to guarantee full safety of the entire persian gulf. Good luck with that.

Any regional country--even Pakistan--can stop the freighters passing through the Strait/north Arabian Sea with a little threat. The cargo ships are handled by civilians; the crew, the insurance companies and the businesses would not dare risk even RPGs fired on them. However, those countries, who want to keep the traffic open, would have to bring in considerable naval power to counter the threats to the cargo ships or to stop the offending country from doing so with military and/or financial means.
Geography matters.
