Iran plays along as neither really wants a hot conflict between the two countries.

Top generals getting bumped off is not really something you would say as "playing along".

The attack seems purely symbolic to me

The attack is a sign of what could happen in the region, with oil installations and military bases if the enemy involves directly attacking us and if the regional clans/tribes (so called states) don't take a neutral stance (which means not supporting Iran, neither supporting and hosting US forces)

I think the assessment of Iran is that the B2's attacking Fordow used Qatar, probably Al-Udaidah airbase.
It's purely symbolic. Not even news worthy in my book.

Right. However, Iran is reeling not because it was attacked. It was a sucker punch with all sorts of diversions and distractions. Everyone knew it was coming and than no one knew WHEN it was coming.
While Iran has been over publicizing and under delivering. Even orange said 14 days... Iran is way too predictable and underwhelming.
However, it isn't politically conducive to man Al Udeid for the rest of this conflict which can be interpreted as a net win for Iran.
