Unfortunately, that's been the mentality of the Islamic Republic for decades and you worded it perfectly.
Popular figures like Khatami and Ahmadinejad that enjoyed the support of millions of Iranians were first insulted, their public images were distorted and destroyed, and then were thrown away like tools that outlived their usefulness. The regime, probably one group of people, has always been afraid of letting popular public figures stay in power.

In a system like this where you are thrown away like a used toilet paper, is it surprising that so many people want to establish contact with foreigners?

Ahmadinejad was the Trump of Iran. They didn't like him because they couldn't control him and make him play their stupid game of Khamenei vs. Rafsanjani (and recently, Khamenei vs. Rohani) where the only thing that gets screwed along the way is Iran's national interests.

When you put dumb people in charge...stuff happens.
Look at the first Gulf war....it was disastrous for the US, who pushed them into it? The Neo-Cons....who are the New-Cons? Jewish globalists....Trotskyites. They saw the opportunity with Bush Jr....he was dumb and they used him for Iraq and Afghnistan.
Now, Trump....another dumb SOB, they did the same thing.....they railroaded him into almost another war in the ME. When you have smart people in charge, this stuff doesn't happen, or the mistakes are much smaller in scale. The US lost 11 Trillion Dollars in the ME wars. 5000 soldiers died, 30,000 maimed or handicapped for life. That's not a small number, not even for the US. Forget the people, the 11 trillion is a king's ransom to lose and not change anything in the ME....the Taliban are back and Iraq is not yet secure, even after decades...this is what a big scale failure looks like.
Same thing with Iran......there is always one step forward, two steps back....why? Dumb, old and badly educated people in charge.

Unfortunately, the main difference is that the US system of governance has self-correcting mechanisms as it has some democratic elements in it. Sure, the presidential election is manipulated behind the scene by zillionaires, but at least there's some sort of mechanism for setting things right.

The IR, on the other hand, is a closed system where people's opinions don't mean shit to the establishment. Remember how Iranians opposed nuclear weapons and preferred to trade with the world? They insisted on a token, useless nuclear program until we reached this point. Now that nearly all Iranians want the bomb, they want to give the whole thing away and repeat "we do not want nuclear weapons". The regime almost always moves in the opposite direction of Iran's national interests and what people want.

I know....you guys think this is weak.....no! This is smart....let's play nice with our enemies, let them think we are not a threat....and then use a page out of the Israeli playbook, and hit them with plausible deniability.
Another thing, Iran needed the ceasefire, as much as anyone....if the war had escalated it may have drawn in the US in, full on, then what? We did the smart thing....we are not ready for a full scale war against both the US and Israel.
We need this time to quickly rebuild.....to win, is to drag out the war and outlast the enemy's will to fight.

You are correct brother....but if we point out the failures, at least it might be talked about.....you know one of the most important thing a fortune 500 company does when something goes wrong is?
They launch an investigation....they want to know the root cause and then an action plan to fix it and prevent it from reoccurring. This mindset can be used in a govt and an army too. When we enact a very big change in the processes of a company, we do a pilot program, a trail to see how it works, and then go out into the field and talk with the managers and front line people for feedback....then come back and fine tune things, then go back out in the field and ask for another feedback......it never stops, we're constantly retuning....perfecting the system. Why do I bring this up? Remember the Ukrainian flight that was shot down in Tehran? Our civilian airspace was not closed after that Iraq base missile barrage.....? WOW! This is like waking up in the morning and going to work and forgetting to put on your pants! This showed me a level of disorganization that's on par with militias...not a world class fighting force.

PS: I don't care which party is in charge....I just want intelligent and efficient, capable people in charge. Iranians are unique, hard working, smart people, with a great moral center......that's not very common, we need the best of us, leading us.

Perhaps you're right......but it needs to be done, at some point, if we are to survive and thrive as a nation. We need to separate church and state.....let spiritual leaders, lead us in our moral goals, and let a smart, elected government lead us in our economic goals.

Try separating the Synagogue/Evangelical church from the state in the U.S before you dream of separating the "Church and state in Iran. The Loser Pahlavis ( reza and mohamad reza) had separated "church from state' and we saw how that worked out!
