Iranian Air Defence Systems | News and Discussions

It’s fine as it is.

MALE drones don’t go higher than 35,000 at best and many operate much lower due to sensors. So this missile is for that class of drones and lower.

HALE is irrelevant, not that many countries operate HALEs in large numbers. HALE is mostly used for recon and SIGINT.

Increasing altitude to that part would require much stronger engine which would require burning alot more fuel to climb (and quickly) and almost certainly reduce your range to less than 20KM and endurance time in the air. Not to mention make the weapons platform much more expensive for little added utility.

Not many ground launched ADs or even A2A missiles can go to 60,000 feet without being costly.
fair point but we also see that RQ-4 / MQ-4 fly higher than that and are widely used in Yemen recently and not shot down (as far as I remember RQ-4 has never been downed over Yemen)

even in Lebanon, Hezbollah only managed to down 1-2 Hermes 900 drones

Yeah there’s probably ~100 of those drones in active service across US military. And they are ISR platforms.

You remove them then US will just use Rq-180, U2, etc not to mention the tens if not hundreds of spy satellites it has access to.

Just not worth it to develop such a weapon for a militant group. You are better off waiting for lasers to catch up. Chinese have claimed they can remove the heat coating on a HGV warhead using lasers which will cause it to burn up at high speeds. Given that HGVs operate up to 120,000 altitude that means (if Chinese aren’t lying) you can get lasers that can shoot down HALE for pennies on the dollar.

The team of scientists who built the Azarakhsh defense system must have a lot of fun. Indeed, this air defense system has several possibilities to be improved and we are very close to an Iranian pantsir when we look at its configuration.

This air defense system has a lot of future for various configurations

Is there any loitering sam or Manpad which has 60,000 ft range?

No. It requires a powerful engine and/or a lot of fuel to reach 60,000-70,000 feet.

Patriot/S-300 can reach that height, but look at the size of those defense missiles and more importantly…their cost.

A manpad and loitering SAM is meant to be able to carried by a 1-2 man crew and either shoulder launched or rail launched. Thus they are usually for the 15,000-35,000 feet envelope where helicopters, drones, and jets attempting bombing runs operate.

60,000+ is usually for intelligence gathering or fast interceptors.

Just Su-35 might not be enough for successful counter-air and offensive retaliation against Israel.

Iran needs stealth fighters too, so hope they can order some J-35s from China. Stealth fighters, while not entirely invisible from radar, helps to decrease the ranges at which they can be detected, thus allowing them to safely release their stand-off munitions at ranges beyond effective enemy SAM systems, especially if Iran can launch stealth Land-Attack Cruise Missiles and Anti-Ship Missiles too from the bomb bays.
