Well there goes the already dying Iranian space program
And once again Iran is going to have a reformist to negotiate against a Republican President (Trump).
Neither side (reformist or conservative) can fix the economy issue. It isn’t as easy as waving a wand to jumpstart Iranian economy. There needs to be major anti-corruption drives including top brass, overhaul of contract law, tax code, large infrastructure spending bills, business friendly policies, and more free market dynamics.

It's no wonder that during the Obama administration.
With the threat of war rising like never before in the Middle East and the election of Trump in the U.S., I feel there is great risk in electing Pezeshkian as Iran's president.
Pezeshkian insists on negotiating with the West, but one wonders what kind of deal he intends to make.
Is he going to accede to the U.S. demand for total disarmament and suspension of aid to Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine?

As soon as I heard he was running, I knew he was going to be President. Iran has a history of doing ‘good cop, bad cop’ presidents.
The nuclear file comes to Rahbar not the president of Iran. And no deal can be sided unless most major factions give their blessing. While it’s true Rahbar could go against the consensus of the factions and torpedo a possible deal or force it’s acceptance, history has shown he usually makes sure factions want a deal and then he ‘allows’ it. This is to hedge being blamed for the deal or lack thereof.
Basic Machiavellian politics
He doesn’t have any power in negotiations. The red lines are set by National security council and Rahbar than the foreign ministry team for nuclear negotiations hammers it out.
President can do nothing more than voice his opinion behind closed doors amongst a sea of much more powerful voices (IRGC, Khomeini family and affiliated factions, Rafsanjani family And affiliates, Larijani family, etc etc etc)

It reminds us of the lesson of history that no matter what people think of a president who is welcomed abroad, that president has never brought gospel to his country.
That is by no means only the case with Rouhani.
What happened to the Soviet Union and Russia with Gorbachev and Yeltsin, who were very popular with Westerners?
Conversely, what happened to the era of Vladimir Putin, who is still hated by the West?
Why did China become an incredibly powerful country under Xi Jinping, who is hated by the US, while Japan declined miserably under Shinzo Abe, who is welcomed with open arms by the US?
Turkey's military government, welcomed by the West, failed to modernize, but under Erdogan, heavily criticized as an Islamic fundamentalist, Turkey grew remarkably and became a major power.
These are simply lessons of history without subjectivity.

I am curious about Iranian politics. There is a strong element of the people getting to elect their presidents so despite all the demonising the west does on Iran to me it does come across democratic, a democratic theocracy. although my understanding is the last say is with ayatollah khamenei. However if I look at the UK, the king has the final say as well as heads of state to ok the appointments.
