Is India Heading For A Food Crisis?

Drought conditions are predicted for this rainy season as rains are scarce and seeds and seedlings planted are dying but this does not make India go into famine. 2026’s India is totally different from 1990’s. We have planned for these hiccups like any other country. Let us wait and see if we go with a begging bowl to other countries for scraps. Chinese seem to be cautioning us for the disaster as any good neighbor do. So kind of them. I wish them same kind of goodwill from us when it comes to that.

You made a mistake. Chinese people never mock hunger and poverty, because we used to be even more hungry and poor than India. What we cannot accept is a country exporting food while starving.

In that case, you must stop importing food products from Pakistan, who is faring worst in South Asia and second only to Afghanistan in the whole region in respect to food security.

China only imports a specialty rice called Basmati from Pakistan, and only 150000 tons. This can be ignored in the proportion of imported grain in China, and it can only be classified as a specialty food.

Because Chinese have higher moral standards does not mean chinese enemies have high moral standards. Indians would love to watch Chinese starve so I wouldn't give them the light of day and if they starve due to super el nino then i couldn't care less tbh.

I am more worried about Pakistan as we stand at 106th place. The poverty and the food crises is visible. GoP needs to focus on these issues because more instability and in the region is coming.

150 thousand tons of rice can feed a lot of people. (And latest figure is 361 thousand tons)

So can the rest of the following food products ---

Key Food and Agri-Export Categories

• Rice: Rice is one of Pakistan's top food exports to China, reaching $122.99 million in the first seven months of 2026 (a 200% increase year-over-year with shipment volumes up 265% to nearly 361,000 metric tons). Both Basmati and non-Basmati varieties are shipped, including major regional orders from Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
• Seafood & Aquatics: Fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and aquatic invertebrates totaled $219.26 million.
• Meat & Halal Protein: Boiled beef and meat preparations have surged (boiled beef exports rose 177% in value in 2025 to $14.52 million). Pakistan and China have expanded cooperation in halal meat (beef, mutton, and poultry), with ongoing investments in high-tech slaughterhouses.
• Fruits, Vegetables & Grains: Edible fruits, nuts, citrus peel, oilseeds, sesame seeds, and cereal crops (such as maize/corn) continue to expand as new GACC (General Administration of Customs China) phytosanitary protocols are established

Thank you no human being should wish or think hunger and poverty on other human beings. But there seems to be posters who think otherwise. My interactions with Chinese in USA made me realize that in general Chinese people are straight forward in their opinions and don’t like to mince words. Some people might think they are blunt but for me it gave a perspective different from other people.

India always puts Indians first may be you have different opinions on this matter. What ever other people project about India, truth is different what we see living in India. Yes poverty is there and bad things do happen in India like any other country but government and Indians themselves want to uplift from poverty and many schemes and organizations trying to help.

Political structure is different in India than China so you see in general the changes are slow and riddled with so many hurdles which might seem impossible to overcome for outsiders but they are happening. We also hope the system will run smooth and fast but we have to be patient due to diversity. We are not homogeneous in language, culture, habits and perspectives. We do learn from each other but it takes time.

In general there are many of us who are proud of china’s achievements as human beings. I strongly believe every achievement by any group or country will do good for the entire humanity. Yes there might be conflicts and differences between China and India but may be in few decades we will have different opinions. I might not be alive to see it but I Wii always have goodwill towards humanity to live peacefully and in harmony.

May be I am a fool but I have seen affection and kindness when I expected none. Our own experiences shape our thinking. Some of you are quite young and as you age your perception will change inadvertently.

Due to cultural differences, Indians do not understand just how unacceptable this is to the Chinese.

"民以食为天" "洪范八政,食为政首" Traditional Chinese culture holds that ensuring the people have enough to eat is the most important foundation of a government’s legitimacy. Furthermore, Chinese governments throughout history have had an inherent responsibility to prevent famine. When agriculture is hit by disasters, the government must stabilize grain prices, ensure a secure grain supply at low prices, and maintain grain reserves, among other measures.

The underlying logic of this culture is that food is the foundation of human life, and human life cannot be sacrificed for profit. The government’s authority derives from the responsibilities it bears; if it cannot safeguard the most fundamental right to life, then it should not continue to hold that authority.

Incidentally, in ancient China, hoarding and speculating on grain during famines was punishable by “诛三族 (execution of the offender and all three generations of his family—father, mother, and wife),” and even in modern China, grain speculation remains a direct path to the death penalty.
