Islamabad is Getting an Electric Tram Service on Four Routes

Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority (CDA) is preparing to launch an electric tram service in the capital city, taking a major step toward modern, eco-friendly public transportation.

CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa announced the development after a meeting with officials from the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) on Thursday.

He said the authority had officially decided to conduct a feasibility study for the tram project, in line with directives from the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister.

“We’re moving step by step. Electric buses are already running, and now we’re exploring the introduction of electric trams,” Randhawa told a national daily. “Today, we agreed to move forward with a feasibility study.”

A CDA press release stated that the meeting focused on operationalizing Soft Wheel Electric Trams and improving the electric feeder bus network already in service. The CDA chairman instructed the concerned departments to finalize the study, ensuring the tram service is implemented along Islamabad’s busiest routes.

Sources within the CDA revealed that a Chinese consulting firm is likely to be hired for the feasibility study. Initially, four routes are being considered, including a line from Rawat to Faisal Mosque via the Expressway, and from Jinnah Square to Islamabad International Airport along Srinagar Highway.

Although the city has previously proposed similar transit projects, such as a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system in partnership with China Railway, those efforts never materialized. This time, officials insist they are determined to follow through.

ISALMABAD: As work on a mega project to convert CDA’s old nursery into ‘Gardenia Hub’ continues, the civic body has stated that there will be improvement in the horticulture sector once the project is completed.

CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa paid a visit to the CDA nurserylocated on Park Road. Members environment, administration, engineering and finance accompanied him during the visit,” says a press release.

Mr Randhawa said the primary objective of upgrading the CDA nursery was to establish Islamabad as a significant hub in the horticulture sector. He also directed that the construction of modern and beautiful flower shops should be completed swiftly.

“This will not only enhance the city’s beauty but also create an attractive recreational spot for citizens. The CDA chairman instructed that unique, state-of-the-art controlled ventilated greenhouses be constructed within the nursery. These will provide an ideal environment for plant growth and also support research and development,” the press release added.

Mr Randhawa also directed the establishment of a tissue culture laboratory at the site.

“This facility will enable the propagation of new plant varieties using advanced techniques,” he said, adding that a dedicated space should be allocated within the nursery for displaying a variety of colourful flowers, where beautiful seasonal and off-season species can be showcased for the public.

“Developing the nursery as the ‘Gardenia Hub’ is a crucial step towards making Islamabad an even more beautiful and lush green capital,” read the press release.

The CDA chief emphasised that this project will not only enhance the city’s aesthetics but will also create new employment opportunities in the horticulture sector, adding that the project is a vital part of CDA’s efforts to provide citizens with a clean and green environment.

ISLAMABAD: London's Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust has signed its first official partnership with a Pakistani hospital, Novacare Hospital, to share clinical best practices and foster healthcare staff development.

Under the agreement, Imperial College NHS will provide expert consultation in hospital planning, training, and clinical guidance. In return, affiliate fees generated by Novacare will be reinvested into Imperial's NHS services in the UK.

The Novacare Hospital, currently under construction in Islamabad's DHA Phase, is scheduled to open in 2026. It aims to deliver advanced medical care across 28 clinical specialties including cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, neurology, and maternal health. The facility will feature smart building management systems, AI-optimised elevators, and cutting-edge infection control and fall prevention technologies.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG OBE called the partnership a milestone in healthcare collaboration. "This agreement is bringing the UK's world-leading healthcare expertise to Pakistan and, in turn, supports the UK's NHS. By sharing best practices and helping to develop clinical staff, this partnership will directly help save lives," she said.

The initiative is part of the UK's broader strategy to export NHS clinical standards globally. The partnership will also allow Novacare clinicians to observe NHS multidisciplinary meetings, consult UK specialists for second opinions, and receive training based on NHS protocols.

Additionally, complex cases may be referred to Imperial's private facilities in London, further supporting UK healthcare revenue.
