JF-17 - Updates, News & Discussion

Between block 1 and 2? Airframe is same avionics upgrades
nothing worth the cost of upgrades. Think of it more as optimisations and not upgrades.

They had created the MRO facility in PAC Kamra additionally their were news for strengthening of wings of block-1, with some other tweaks and stuff like integration of REK capabilities across the fleet as we know block-1 were not capable to cary REK initially.

There are news that entire fleet of Block-1 JF-17 are going to get upgrade to block-3. That will obviously boost PAF capability.

I don’t think this is exactly “block 2 standards”.

They strengthened the wings, the airframes will be end of life soon and it won’t be worth retaining them

We have been refurbing mirages for like 40 years. airframes have gone through multiple overhauls. I think with JF17 we can keep them in the air for a long time if we wanted to. If we had the money to buy new airframes, I would rather overhaul blk1 and bring it at best to blk2 and sell to Nigeria/Myanmar or even Bangladesh if they showed interest. Esp. in Nigeria's case that is more then enough for their needs.

Mirages are a bad example to use.

This was done out of necessity. There was no alternative BUT to keep the mirages in service. They would have retired them straight away had they had a choice.

The reason this does not apply to JF-17s is simple. Is it worth it?
Is it worth taking what is already quite a cheap airframe, which would need significant modification and investment to bring up to scratch and doing all of this? A block 1 upcycle would literally involve gutting the airframe of most of the critical and expensive components. New avionics, new electronics, new sensors, new engines, new fuel lines, re enforcement of structures and also replacement of panels.

Looking at all of this, what is actually left? Some scrap metal and wiring looms? Even down to the aircraft lighting is all new, there is no point in saving those airframes. Lets pretend they're even 10% of the cost of the aircraft, theres not much point in keeping those around since youll have to deal with fatigue issues and all, when replacing literally every component on the aircraft, may as well save the headache and buy new frames too. Bare in mind also, no AAR on Block 1's.

Given Pakistan makes the airframe( and sources bits from china for the remaining), building a new airframe to rehouse all of the components from the Block 1 airframes makes a lot of sense as you say given that the components are not that old and very capable. In that regard, I do wish PAF had gone to 100% airframe manufacturing to keep costs even lower. It will also keep the JF17 line busy aswell keeping skills alive until the next project comes along

( think i echoed what you said, but it was so well said so a double tap is not too bad ! )

Did PAF cannibalized Mirage airframes even after overhaul ?

If I understand correctly, you're suggesting that the cost-benefit analysis favors acquiring new jets over upgrading older airframes. Is this what you are referring to?
