Jinnah Class Frigate | Updates & Discussion

When designing warships, the primary consideration is tactical missions, followed by the range of available technologies, and finally cost considerations.

Tactical missions.
The more powerful a nation is, the simpler the tactical mission of a single warship becomes. It possesses extremely strong capabilities in a single mission but is weak in other areas. They require other warships to complement them, thereby forming a powerful and comprehensive combat capability.
Weaker nations cannot afford a large naval fleet. Therefore, their individual warships must undertake multiple tactical missions. These warships have multi-mission capabilities, but none of these capabilities are particularly strong.

The difference between the PLA Navy version and the Pakistani Navy version of the Type 054 frigate lies in the completely different tactical mission assignments assigned to it by the two navies.

How many VLS does the Jinnah-class frigate need?
This depends on the PN's tactical mission positioning for it.

You’re absolutely right, tactical missions ultimately define how many VLS a ship truly needs. For a navy like PN, which cannot afford to field a very large fleet, its surface combatants must carry multi-mission capabilities rather than being highly specialized.

That’s exactly why increasing VLS capacity on the Jinnah-class makes sense: it provides flexibility to handle multiple mission profiles without requiring additional hulls.

The AS3600 concept shows that larger layouts, such as two × 32-cell VLS are structurally feasible on a similar hull. Given that JCF is 3,300 tonnes, adopting two × 16-cell VLS remains both practical and balanced.

Coupled with the potential of CAMM-ER or MR quad-packing in larger VLS (like Sylver A50 or MIDLAS) and the possibility of extending such fits to F22Ps, Yarmooks, and Babur-class, PN can significantly enhance its tactical flexibility without drastically increasing fleet size.

Correction: The JCF is not based on the Istanbul-class frigate, but rather on the AS-3600 design developed by ASFAT.

How is the development going for our first Jinnah Frigate ?
Heard development started after completion of last Milgem corvette

Navy always do a kneel laying ceremony attended by CNS or PM / President to mark the official start of construction. It did for all the ships & submarines till date from smaller ones to large ones. But there is no such ceremony held for JCF yet. Not even a press release.

So I think, design phase was completed and work on the hull itself has not started yet. JCF will take good 5 years before its inducted. Early 2030s.

I think time has arrived for to procure 4 Type 052E(advance version of Type-52Ds).
Absolutely don't know why there are not going for it. It can be inducted in small batches of 2+2. PN offensive punch should be type 52 d. Submarines cant do all roles of surface fleet .especially if we want to attack their ports too from long range vectors of PN.

Interview of PN CNS Adm. Naveed Ashraf: The #Jinnah Class Frigate marks a significant advancement for Pakistan Navy as our first indigenously designed frigate. The first frigate is scheduled to be launched soon, with subsequent units planned for delivery at a consistent tempo that aligns with our operational requirements, strategic objectives and availability of resources.

Currently, our industrial base is developing and gearing up for this initiative, and we anticipate that our technological capabilities will grow throughout the program. This growth will be facilitated through partnerships with experienced defense partners (from friendly countries).

Sir if not possible buy the bigger type 054B variant of 054A and add more ASHM into it. Plus, 100mm gun should be present.

Is jcf really gonna have 16 vls cells? Its gonna be a shame if thats the case. 32 cells that can be quadpacked with camm-er is the minimum we should strive for
Reportedly will have varying iterations but woth possible larger more cell laden variants im the future.
