EDGE has announced the signing of a major AED 9 billion (USD 2.45 billion) defence contract with the Kuwait Ministry of Defense for the supply of 8 FALAJ-3 62-metre missile boats. This contract marks the largest naval shipbuilding export in the region and ranks among the highest-value naval export deals globally.

EDGE press release

As the prime contractor, EDGE will lead the programme which includes the design, construction, trials, and delivery of the vessels, in addition to Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) and In-Service Support (ISS). EDGE will also provide the ammunition for the vessels, further demonstrating its end-to-end capability offering. Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB), EDGE Group’s naval arm and the UAE’s leading shipbuilder, has been selected as the build subcontractor for the programme.

“This agreement with Kuwait is hugely significant both in scale and strategic importance. It deepens long-term defence ties between our nations, brings a proven class of advanced vessels into regional service, and reinforces EDGE’s position as a trusted international partner. It also reflects the pace of industrial and engineering progress we’ve achieved in just a few years, and our ability to design, build, and deliver complex naval platforms at scale. As we enter a new phase of export-led growth, this programme marks a clear signal of global confidence in what EDGE can deliver.”

Hamad Al Marar, Managing Director and CEO, EDGE

The FALAJ-3 -class missile boat has also been selected by the UAE Navy, with the first vessel, ALTAF, formally commissioned into service in February 2025. The UAE tests the first unmanned fighter plane that exceeded the speed of sound in cooperation with South Korea

1754224903667.png

In the development that votes a major change in the balance of regional powers, sources familiar with the defense industries in the Gulf region revealed an Emirati-Korean Southern Secret Project to develop an uninhabited fighter plane that exceeded its speed speed, is currently being tested away from the limelight in closed desert facilities within the UAE.

According to these leaks, the project bears an internal symbolic name (not yet revealed) and is supervised by a joint team of engineers from the Emirates and the Korea space Industries, as part of a joint research cooperation agreement since 2022.

This plane, which is described as "the new generation of fighter drowns", will be, if the leaks are correct, the first unprecedented system is being developed within an Arab country, in a qualitative leap in terms of dependence on artificial intelligence, ghostly design, and the speed of strategic spread.
Features of the joint project: engineering acceleration away from the media

According to a defensive source in Abu Dhabi, who spoke to the Defense Arabia team, provided that his name is not disclosed, the initial model of the plane has already entered the phase of payment and dynamic simulation tests in closed facilities inside the Al Dhafra region, with joint funding between the UAE Ministry of Defense and the Balance Foundation.

The information indicates that the engineering design of the plane depends on the acute triangular wing engineering (DUCTED InLLT) and a turbocharged jet engine from the Kai T-50-designed platform to be more integrated with the grille.

The operating philosophy is also based on the concept of "independent fighting", that is, the drone will be able to carry out complex offensive tasks (such as clash with planes or hit defense targets) without the need to drive directly from a ground station throughout the mission period, through artificial intelligence systems based on deep learning and dynamic adaptive planning.

The UAE is developing a new air defense vehicle equipped with a 35 mm cannon and laser weapons

The latest Emirati defense innovation.. the “Damita” 8x8 vehicle equipped with a cannon and laser to confront drones (Image source: Calidus)

The Emirati company Calidus Defense Company, according to the Army Recognition website, revealed its new self-propelled air defense system “Damita”, which is a mobile platform built on an 8x8 armored “Wahash” chassis, and specially designed to confront drones and low-altitude aircraft.

The system embodies the UAE's ambition to expand its local portfolio of short-range air defense systems and strengthen its regional defense industry. The system combines an Emirati mobility platform, a German-designed automatic cannon package, and a set of sensors and fire control devices developed in Australia, to provide a mobile platform capable of tracking, identifying and engaging small drones and low-flying fixed-wing threats.

Multiple layers of conventional and laser weapons

The website confirmed that the Damita system is distinguished by its integration of multiple layers of effects designed to neutralize a wide spectrum of air threats.

At the heart of the system stands the advanced Rheinmetall Skyranger 35 turret, which integrates a 35 mm machine gun capable of firing advanced programmable air-burst AHEAD munitions, and a guided missile launcher (the company did not reveal its type or source), which is believed to be compatible with short-range missiles such as the Thales Starstreak to extend the engagement range. Calidus also revealed a laser weapons system it developed in partnership with the Australian company Electro Optic Systems. (EOS), with an output power ranging from 50 to 150 kW, providing a challenging destructive capability against drones.

Integrating Western technology under the banner of an Emirati defense industry

According to the website, the unveiling of “Damita” represents more than just a new vehicle; It indicates the adoption of a new defense doctrine in which the UAE invests in multi-domain air defense layers in which conventional guns, guided missiles and laser weapons are deployed on a single platform, interconnected for coordinated engagement against threats.

From the perspective of the defense industrial base, this development shows Calidus' increasing influence in integrating Western technologies to confront specific threats in the Gulf region. The company is integrating components from Rheinmetall and EOS and potentially components from Thales or MBDA under the Emirati banner, positioning it as a hub for the development of integrated air defense platforms tailored for desert and urban environments and expeditionary missions.

Future prospects and potential regional impacts

As threats from drones increase across the Middle East, demand for such systems is likely to grow. The Damita system may not only strengthen the UAE's local air defenses, but may also emerge as a competitor in the competitive export market for mobile counter-drone systems.

Sources close to the program indicate that limited operational evaluations may begin in 2026, with interest expressed by at least two partner countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council. The success of the system will depend on Calidus’ management of its industrial partnerships and its performance in real-world operational tests, which could pave the way for more autonomous and advanced solutions in the field of regional air defense.
