Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat (UM6P), Morocco has formally opened its new data center, which will host what it claims is the most powerful supercomputer in Africa.

Named Toubkal, the device is powered by Dell Poweredge C6420 server blades running 2.2GHz Intel Xeon Platinum 82761 CPUs, with networking supported by Mellanox Infiniband HDR100 fiber networking. The system was brought online last year, but had yet to fully launch. At the time, the supercomputer was ranked as the world's 98th fastest system, according to Top500.

Hosted within the new ’s African Supercomputing Center (ASCC), the supercomputer is intended to help the University coordinate research across Africa into a range of areas, including artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, genomics and analytics.

ASCC is located in the university's Benguerir Data Center, built in collaboration with local phosphate giant OCP Group. The Tier IV Design certified facility can support up to 5MW of IT load, and is also home to managed services cloud provider Atlas Cloud Services.

The University of Cambridge, Cambridge Research Computing and Dell Technologies have engineered a supercomputing infrastructure for Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Morocco. It allows scientists across Africa to work with massive data volumes, spearheading research innovation that can improve the quality of life and nutrition for millions. A further project is now being planned in South Africa.

UM6P presented the University of Cambridge with an opportunity to further its goals for democratising HPC. Dell Technologies facilitated a collaboration with UM6P’s African Supercomputing Center (ASCC) and Cambridge Research Computing. Together, the parties developed Toubkal, Africa’s first Top 100 supercomputer. Toubkal – named after the highest mountain in southwestern Morocco – comprises 1,300 Dell PowerEdge servers with Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and over 8,000TB of storage.

Today, the UM6P supercomputer serves researchers and data scientists who conduct important work in such areas as genomics, food security and agriculture, bolstered by AI and data analytics. They model satellite data to improve agricultural land management, meteorological data to make greater use of renewable energies, and the genomes of African nutritional plants that should be protected. These efforts could benefit millions of people across the continent and beyond.

Morocco will manufacture Weldable Ballistic Steel
The state will support Maghreb Steel, a major national player in the steel industry, in developing four innovative projects. The company will benefit from financial support as part of the Industrial Innovation Support Program financed through the Innovation Support Fund (FSI).

The aim of the contract signed with the state in this context is to support the company in developing innovative products that are 100% made in Morocco. The company's first project to be funded under this program is called “Weathering” and concerns the development of thin, microalloy self-weathering steel.

- The second project, Magzam, concerns the development of a corrosion-resistant coating for steel and the design of a galvanizing simulator. The other two projects, Armor Steel and DP Steel, will enable the development of weldable ballistic steel and bendable ballistic steel obtained by controlled rolling, and dual phase steel for the automotive industry,
