New York poised for first South Asian - origin and Muslim mayor as Cuomo concedes to Mamdani

Yes, that is largely the case here. As I mentioned before, Mandani show the Dem how this can be done basically by beating the GOP and the Dem esatablishment at the same time, this can be done even if people throw million of dollars against you, but whether or not the Dem takes this up from Mandani campaign remain to be seen, we will see it in the next 365 days (364 now) because we would know if the Dem continue on their current strategy and inhabit Mandani and basically sideline him, or they started to embrace his ideology, and by embracing I don't mean they all turn to further left, but instead welcome Mandani as part of the change, they can stay left to the center but they would need to give up some of their "Billionaire Trait" because that is the reason why peope hate the Demcratic party now.

On the other hand, I will add that there is a hidden danger for the GOP, if they now copy what Mandani did and started to go back and focus on affordability, that would mean they had to admit whatever they did so far is not working, and is in the wrong direction, you can't have Trump said one day "Price are down, inflation is gone, we had more tariff revenue than never, etc" and on the other side the Congressional GOP admit houses is not afforable, price are out of control. You can't have that conflict, and as of yesterday, I still see Trump going on Social media saying "Everything is low, we have all the money"...... That's not going to work if you have the head of state saying that and the Congress saying soemthing opposite, now, it depends on who cave first, at this moment it's the congress, because we saw Mike Johnson et el still think everything is A-OK even when they got smack in the face in these 4 (well, 2 essentially) race, and a collection of minor race, including Dem now had supermajority in Virginia, after Nov 4 that will push Virginia further into the Blue, even Mississippi and Georgia had democratic friendly result (Think Mississippi elected its first dem woman as senator and Dem won 2 state worker seats in Georgia). That is a problem, and again, as I said before, I guess we will find out in the next 364 days whether or not GOP backtracks their policy and solely focuses on the economy.
Trump’s said yesterday that the government has to be opened up. If this shutdown drags close to and includes thanksgiving, and Trump is seen as ruining thanksgiving; travel and food prices, the ramifications will linger. Especially when the other side has an issue to pin on the republicans; affordability.

It’s going to be an interesting 364 days.

Mamdani sort of looks like VP J.D. Vance and he doesn't have a name with 'Mohammad' or 'Khan' or 'Bin XYZ' in his name. To the fleeting attention span of Americans, he doesn't look too 'alien' while Ramaswami does.
Everything counts in America--especially the visuals!
Mamdani’s name is very interesting. For many Americans, if they didn’t show a picture of him and didn’t give his background, most people would accept him as some odd name but not part of a large “foreigner cohort”. Btw, he is also very good for South Asians, especially Indians, in pushing back against the xenophobia. His victory speech hit just the right tone of fighting for the future of his fellow Americans but not saying away from being an immigrant.

Fat chance it will happen, I don't see how the dem will let this go without having the medicaid tax credit, I mean this suits the Democrats better than the GOP because most people think it's the GOP and faults for the shutdown. Before, there were only polls, but after Nov 4, we had 2 elections to prove it. I don't see how the GOP is going to agree to that, tho, and Trump repeatedly wanted the GOP-led Senate to nuke the Senate, but I just don't see how it can happen, for things that small. If they nuke the Senate, then it will blow back to them if and when the dem take back the Senate.

The moment they nuke the Senate is the moment they WILL LOSE the mid-term and beyond. Because this "you will never lose an election" (His word, not mine) will be perceived by many as "Dictatorship," and that would probably draw more people than Mandani ever would. That is the reason why the Democrat Senate didn't do it in 2021 when they had a chance, even though they had all 3 aligned like the GOP now..

This isn't going well for the Republicans, and they won't be able to solve this if they still think they are in a better position.

It was Harry Reid when he was Majority Leader who set the stage for nuking the filibuster.

That is fact.

Now that Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are out of the Senate, I assure you the first thing Chuck Shumer will do when he returns to being Majority Leader is kill the filibuster.

Oh, and as a reminder, because I am guilty as well, let's keep the wandering to a minimum. Read the thread title again if you're not sure the topic.

Mamdani is being promoted as the next Obama, right down to the children’s books.

Harry Reid only removed the 60 vote requirement for approving judicial appointments. The 60 vote requirement remains for everything else.

Speaking personally, I will be very happy to see the filibuster and the 60 vote requirement go away. The Senate has been an obstructionist body for so long and the filibuster among the obstructionist tools. The party that won elections and is the majority should be allowed to push through its agenda and not be blocked by some artificial 60 vote requirement. Let the chips fall where they may.

Civil war is not in this equation unless some sort of fundamental civil liberty is taken out of the Citizens. Things like 2A to the Conservative and 1A to the Leftist, if you take away those rights, then we will have a civil war on our hands.
On the other hand, I would argue we are already in some sort of civil war; we just weren't violent at this point (apart from individual incidents). This war is fought in courts, public opinion, and Political Ideology. We aren't a united nation, that much is for sure; we are divided, anyone will tell you that. At this point, this "war" is being fought privately; you don't hear your neighbor who said he hates you because you are on a different political spectrum, but this already happens at home, where political divide rips families apart. Father is not talking to their children because they believe in one ideology, and he, on the other, has people who hate the other side, even tho we are all American (you can see this even here in this forum) that is what apart means. This wasn't the case 20 or 30 years ago when we solved the issue at hand, even if you believed in a different ideology, today? We would rather get piss off than just try to meet people in the middle. I don't know what you had in your definition of civil war, for mine, it had already begun. I left the US in 2010 when I realized the political landscape is simply for parties to "Win" and ignore the people they were supposed to serve.

@Starlord
@j_hungary in his typical verbose way has given a good response, much of what I probably would have posted myself.

Like @Watandar said, Reed did it to unclog the nomination, and then it was followed by Mitch McConnell Nuking the senate in 2017 (Strange you didn't mention that) by breaking the Supreme Court nomination of Neil Gorsuch, and subsequent nominee, resulting in Trump stacking 3 of his Justices in SCOTUS, which then resulted in an 6 to 3 unbalanced SCOTUS bench now, that was the reason why the Dem back off from trying to use Nuclear Option somewhere in 2021 (I forgot what for and too lazy to go online and look it up).

As I said, if Trump use it now, he better pray he can hold the Senate in 2026, otherwise if the Dem had 51 (can't do with 50 as JD vance is the deciding road), They are going to use it alot to roll back and veto Trump's EO, including Presidential Veto, that is very much a "Guarantee"

The thing is, Filibuster is probably one of the most important procedure in US Politics, the problem with US Politics is, unlike the rest of the world, you have power seperated by 3 different branch, where the other (Canada, UK, Australia, for example) had a winner takes all system, which mean Filibuster is not going to work that well if you already had all the power in your government (Or "Mandate") because for example, Australia, when Labour (Left) had 93 MP in the Parliament (out of 150), they already had the mandate (62%), which mean they would have passed the legislation regardless of Filibuster, the same with UK now (In fact the UK is even worse when they have 441 Labour MP in a 650 seat chamber, that's 67%), and if those countries form a minority government (as in no single party break the pole and had to joinedly govern a country) then Filibuster is not important again because you would need both parties (Or however many) to agree to begin with, otherwise you won't even get to vote.

On the other hand, US is different, if Filibuster is broken, then whoever in charge of Senate rules the country literally, you can forget about the President Office, because you can break a President Veto with a filibuster (Which we are trying to take down) and you can forget about House of Rep, because that's basically all budget related issue, which don't require filibuster to begin with. So if the filibuster is gone, then the GOP and the Democrats will just basically compete in the Senate; we can just ignore the House and the Office of the President.

Did not know this about Zohran’s Nani. His Nani song hits harder now:

Also, the rich have always been saying they would move out of New York if the taxes went up. But it’s the normal churn. I don’t blame anyone for saying they want to leave to save on their own taxes, but like Andrew Shultz said, this city is our identity. We who make more than most, want this city to be better and better. So now we have incoming leadership that won’t be tricked by such rhetoric.

Frankly, I’m would hope most Americans would want to see New York prosperous, so it’s a great American city they can also enjoy, when they visit, especially ahead of Christmas.

I agree with you, i will add that those individual acts of violence can go out of control any moment so credit where credit is due that US agencies keep those crazies in control, I bet lots of militias are itching for some civil war type BS so they can use all that ammo they buy on Black Friday deals or those MRE's.
I just don't see a full blown civil war happening in USA, not just because that people and comfort of life but those filthy rich corporations and cabals who are running USA internal and external politics it suits for a control chaos in US rather than a civil war with extreme violence which will then spiral out of control, people these days hate each other with a passion and tendency to commit violence which bothers me, and then when i see nutjobs like Right wingers with AR-15's, that is definitely not a good sight to behold.
