North Korea ramps up ballistic missile production​

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on August 31 inspected a newly built missile production complex and signed three new plans to expand the country’s missile manufacturing capacity, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

During the visit, Kim toured an automated assembly line, which state media described as capable of dramatically increasing missile output for the country’s armed forces. KCNA said Kim reviewed both the current status and future prospects of North Korea’s missile industry.

Kim emphasized that modernized production processes will allow Pyongyang to meet military demand for missiles while raising output levels. He also approved a new defense expenditure plan tied to the expansion project.

The announcement comes as North Korea continues to strengthen its missile arsenal, posing an immediate threat to South Korea and Japan while also aiding Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Western governments and Kyiv have accused Pyongyang of supplying ballistic missiles, including systems such as the KN-23 — a short-range weapon comparable to Russia’s Iskander — which have been used in repeated strikes against Ukrainian targets.

State media highlighted the new automated facility as evidence of progress in defense industrial capacity. Kim’s visit and approval of expansion plans underscore North Korea’s stated goal of accelerating weapons development despite international sanctions and repeated warnings from the United States and its allies.

KCNA did not provide details on the type or number of missiles expected to be produced under the new plans but framed the effort as essential for strengthening national defense. Analysts in Seoul and Washington are likely to view the announcement as part of North Korea’s broader push to demonstrate self-reliance in defense production while deepening ties with Russia.

By expanding missile output, Pyongyang not only enhances its strike capabilities in the region but also increases its ability to provide Moscow with additional munitions. Reports from Ukraine have consistently linked North Korean-supplied systems to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure and cities.

The inspection of the missile production complex follows Kim’s pattern of high-profile visits to defense facilities, used both to signal domestic priorities and to send messages abroad.

Pyongyang, September 9 (KCNA) -- The Missile Administration of the DPRK, together with the Academy of Chemical Materials, conducted another ground jet test of high-thrust solid-fuel engine using the composite carbon fiber material on September 8.

A spokesman for the DPRK Missile Administration made public such following contents:

The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un oversaw the important test.

The ninth ground jet test of the engine is the last one in the development process.

The maximum thrust of the engine is 1 971 kN.

On the same day, a decree on awarding the state commendations to the president of the Academy of Chemical Materials and the director of the Institute of Solid-fuel Engine under the Missile Administration was ratified.

Kim Jong Un appreciated that the eye-opening fruition of the development of high-thrust carbon fiber solid-fuel engine is the success assuming the most strategic nature in the recent modernization of defence technology and heralds a significant change in expanding and strengthening the nuclear strategic forces of the DPRK.

Now we understand why in the last previous photos, one of the 30 mm CIWS turrets was removed; in its place, a CIWS resembling the Chinese Type 730 has been installed. Furthermore, the fire control radars have been replaced with those resembling the Chinese Type 347 or 349. The ATGM-like NLOS launchers have been removed and replaced with additional decoy launchers and other new electronic features installed.

North Korea unveiled its new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile at a parade in Pyongyang to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party. The Hwasong-20 missile can carry multiple nuclear warheads and is capable of striking targets up to 15,000 kilometers away. It is equipped with an improved inertial guidance system and GPS for increased accuracy. Its estimated circular error probable (CEP) is 3-5 kilometers. According to the country's authorities, the three-stage nuclear-armed Hwasong-20 missile is currently "the DPRK's most powerful strategic nuclear weapon."

Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, paid his respects at the cemetery for the fallen soldiers of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army to mark the 75th anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War on October 25.

According to Yonhap News Agency on the 25th, the Korean Central News Agency reported that Chairman Kim visited the Martyrs' Cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in Hoechang County, South Pyongan Province, the previous day and expressed "high tribute." Chairman Kim observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen Chinese soldiers and laid flowers at the grave of Mao Anying, the eldest son of former Chairman Mao Zedong, who was killed in action during the Korean War.

The news agency stated, "The Chinese People's Volunteer Army martyrs, who shed their blood to support our people's revolutionary war and demonstrated the spirit of internationalism and brotherly friendship, are cherished in the hearts of both peoples as a precious symbol of North Korea-China friendship." It continued, "Even as time passes and generations change, our people will never forget the noble blood and immortal achievements of the outstanding sons and daughters of the Chinese people." The report also emphasized, "The friendship between North Korea and China, forged in blood, will continue to demonstrate its invincible vitality in the sacred struggle to achieve anti-imperialist independence and the socialist cause."

Accompanying the visit were Jo Yongwon, Pak Jongchon, and Kim Tokhun, secretaries of the Workers' Party, as well as Foreign Minister Choe Sonhui.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in Hoechang County is the site where the headquarters of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army was located during the Korean War and is the resting place of Mao Anying and other fallen Chinese soldiers. Chairman Kim also visited this site ahead of the 70th anniversary of China's participation in 2020. This year, as it marks a major anniversary (celebrated every five years), Kim's personal visit is seen as significant. However, compared to five years ago, this year's visit did not include any reported remarks from Kim, and fewer military officials accompanied the visit.

Rodong Sinmun Also Highlights 'Historical Ties Between North Korea and China'​

Meanwhile, the Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun also emphasized the historical ties between North Korea and China in an article titled "The Achievements of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army Will Shine Forever Alongside North Korea-China Friendship." The newspaper stated, "The joint commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army's participation in the Korean front by both countries demonstrates the unwavering determination of the two parties and peoples to further elevate and develop North Korea-China friendship."

It continued, "Today, the North Korea-China friendship has entered a new phase of development under the deep attention of the top leaders of both parties and both countries," adding, "Regardless of changes in the international situation, it is the consistent position of our party and government to strengthen and develop the traditional North Korea-China relationship of friendship and cooperation in line with the demands of the times and the shared aspirations of both peoples." The article further stated, "The peoples of North Korea and China will continue to strengthen their support and solidarity in the struggle against imperialist aggression and hegemony, and to safeguard international fairness and justice, always standing together."
