Old Man's Corners

Honestly, the greatest joy for me was not the material comforts after coming to America because on that count I was far more comfortable in Pakistan before coming to America. The joy after coming here was like a toddler discovering things around him. Everything seemed so interesting, scary, appealing, puzzling. It was really, really like a second childhood but well into my 20s/early 30s and I had a streak of independence in me which made me live alone and so the typical immigrant circle of guidance didn't exist for me much. So mistakes and learning. Can't say all that was stress free or cost effective but it was all worth it. I was crazy enough to had taken two long road trips to/from the southeast America to almost the northwest in old beat up cars. In one trip, the car made strange sounds and a mechanic probably in Utah said better turn back or you'd be stranded: So I turned back after watching the Old Faithful in the Yellow Stone NP. One of them was a solo trip and the other with a lady friend. Plus long solo trips in Amtrak and Via Rail Canada. Plus also living considerably on possibly the worst, seediest neighborhood in Canada: The East Hastings in Vancouver!! How many hookers, pimps, junkies I saw daily!! Even interviewed some of them but I won't share. I also have picks of birthday suit ladies and gents from an Iraq War 2003 protest in Vancouver. Some ladies were gorgeous!! Won't share!

@Meengla

Remember those times. Was living in the 'hood in Detroit.

Not all bad, actually kind of great.

You lived in the 'hood of Detroit?!!! Wow!
No sirreee, too much for me. I was repulsed by the violence in 'Menace to Society' movie when it was shown in the 90s. Peaceful, simple, rural life for me.
No 'hoods, no 'inner city', no ghettos.

Sounds like more attention seeking than protesting.

Certainly got my attention and to go to that event I had to take some bus or taxi. Many people watching them naked ladies and gents spread on a large lawn and with cameras focused on them. And some of the protestors were saying like: 'Come, strip and join us for a noble cause! ' Some men looked like aged hippies.
Hahaha!!

@Fatman17 : Your profile pic your own?? If so you remind me of Billy Bob Thornton from 'Sling Blade' movie! I love that movie but my Southern wife hates that movie along with 'Deliverance' because, per her, both movies make fun of the Southerners. I disagree with her on that.

During the crack epidemic.....

Easy to spot crackheads, they are the ones out walking to the crack house every 20 minutes all night long.

Wow! Bro, you sure have the real 'hood credentials.
As to my own: During my months at the East Hasting Street in Vancouver in the 90s, I even interviewed a woman in her early 20s. She had a pipe that she was using out openly. I didn't know what those things were and so I asked her 'What's that?'. She said 'Crack Pipe'. I have her in a video. She must have been quite beautiful before she went into drugs and prostitution. It was a very sad sight. And I saw hundreds of them during my extended stays there. Look up Patricia Hotel on East Hastings Street, Vancouver. My memories are from the 90s but since then that hotel is turned into some 'shelter' by the Canadian govt.
For me, it was very cheap to stay in that hotel then: Would come to only about $150 Canadian which was like a little over $100 America per week.

The production crew camped out for a few weeks in my neighborhood.

I stand slightly corrected on my claim for the videos/pics; thousands of my files got encrypted due to a hacking of my computer in early 2019, including those of the Vancouver protest from early 2003; the hacker had initially asked for $2800, which I refused. But now it is over 5 years and I don't have the access to those precious memories and there is no decryption tool to fix my files. The hacker had vanished soon after I refused. I am so upset because lots of memories are being lost unless a solution is found. Now, I'd pay someone who's reliable to fix my files. This is a Dharma Cezar attack with .adobe file extension.
