Your's was your 'padre'. In my case, early school teachers in Karachi. Not only the measuring wood rulers on your knuckles but one teacher, in my 5th grade, had a peculiarly harsh punishment: He'd lift us boys with our ears off the floor. We heard about him in grade 4th and were dreading grade 5 because of him!
Plus, you know, in Pakistan they have this punishment of going into corner of your class room and sitting down in a 'rooster' (Murgha) posture!! Something like being on a squat toilet with your arms going between your legs from behind and grabbing your ears!!! OMG!

This was a very popular series on Pakistan Television!! But the stereotype of the poor Native Americans (the "Red Indians") was of that of primitive, savages. At least that's what we perceived of them in the 70s as kids. It was only after coming to America that I got better understanding of what went on. Movies like 'Dances with Wolves' helped!

You aint' the only one feeling this summer. This July is likely to be THE hottest on record where I am. Past several summer were fairly nice and so I got spoiled. And this on top of this past January being THE coldest January in 40+ years.
I put some Bermuda grass to patch bare spots on my yard a few weeks ago. Despite fair amount of watering, even that variety of grass is refusing to grow anymore. And they love the heat and the sun!
