Had the pleasure to meet Sweetness in Detroit back in the 1990s when he checked into the Westin Hotel.

After dropping off his luggage, asked him about his off season workouts.

No weights. Spent the summer running up and down the Sleeping Bear dunes in northern Michigan.

A class act. Very kind and humble man.

Hands down, Barry Sanders was the all time greatest running back.

Talking about meeting NFL players. I met No.42 Ronnie Lott at a Warrior's basketball game when they played at the Oakland Coliseum.
Met No.80 Jerry Rice at a 711 store in Foster City.
Seen quite a few players upclose and personal but never actually met them.

I’m a grumpy old man doing a quick Rome/Paris/Barcelona tour for the first time.

Right now first day in Rome and it looks like the stereotypes haven’t changed.

1) Very very tiny cars everywhere…and I mean “Mini” small. Geez these poor souls.

2) Radio stations playing only English language pop songs.

3) cobblestone streets that are very bumpy to drive on

4) landed in Rome and out jumped the smokers of the world.

5) taxi scammers still lurking at the airport exits

6) European airline had the tiniest overhead bins for your luggage possible. People had to load their carryons sideways.

7) of course my iphone would be the one that doesn’t work with Verizon TravelPass. So outside of wifi it is a brick.

But…

1) In a nice hotel and yowsa the a/c was below 70. That’s quite a surprise from a/c hatin Europe. WiFi here awesome too. Toilet uses like 10 gallons to flush. lol!! Al Bundy would be hugging it.

2) Taxi driver accepted ApplePay. This is just the usual stand taxi type lined up outside the airport terminals. Not an Uber.

3) I finally get to use one of those multi-plug adapter thingamabobs in those round European outlets.

Warning grumpy old man European vacation review…

Vatican Museum: meh..not impressed
Sistine Chapel: totally overrated..wasn’t impressed at all. I would even call it a waste of money.

St Peter’s Basilica: Wow! completely underrated. I almost skipped over this and would be kicking myself if I had. This place is a jawdropper. No paint. All tiny glass or stone taken to an insane scale. A real WTF moment. Pieta in a room that is blocked off with glass. Can’t get less than 20 feet from it.

After walking out I called a taxi from the Burger King across the street. Decided to get a Dbl-Whopper to test the differences. It was the driest burger ever.
