We were the lucky ones. The degenerative brain rot of today comes IMO from social media. People are so easily swayed by the latest emotional hotpoint of the day. They saw it on Twitter / Facebook / Instagram so it must be true, right?

Whilst my first computer was a Commodore 64 which was replaced by my beloved Atari - I actually learned how to use a modern computer on an IBM PS/1. Looking back at the processing power we had when 386/486 and Intel 1.10 ghz processors were common - computing has jumped leaps and bounds.

Wow...."Made in USA" even.

386? LOL......my first PC was an 8088 with an 8087. Skipped the 286 stage then had a couple of 386s followed by a couple of 486s. Then came the Pentium. And now?

:-(

More computing power in our smartphones than what ran the first landings on the moon.
 
BTW, I think @Fatman17 and I are old enough to have used punch cards and Fortran for some of our college projects. Who else?

In HS, can't remember what the flavor of BASIC was. Maybe GW-BASIC?

Browsing Amazon last night, there are now gaming MBs that will support up to 256GB of RAM!!! Are you kidding me? It wasn't that long ago I was running VMs at work on 16GB. With what I'm planning on, 128 would be MORE than enough. Key would be the graphics card. At least 12GB there. A gaming class PC would be as closer to a true server without actually buying a server.
Going to spend some time reading on Tom's Hardware later as well as Newegg.

You have the nerve to build a PC these days of very powerful laptops?!!! Kudos!!

Brought back some very old memories. So it was probably in mid 90s I thought of building a PC of my own. I got a tower case and other things but the CPU I bought was a new brand name--forgetting that name--which didn't last long in the market; I was trying to save $ instead of buying what might be an Intel 386 then?? The computer wouldn't even boot: Some error upon booting. My Comp Sci fellow grad student friend (I wasn't in Comp Sci myself) upon hearing my story simply said 'First of all: Hahahahahaha!' Secondly, 'throw away that CPU and get an Intel one'. He had warned me about the new CPU but I tried to be cheap.
Oh, those days, 4 MB of video RAM was a lot!!

BASIC

Created a program where the HS math teacher can enter the test scores of each student, and it automatically calculated the student's grade as the year went on.

Spent the last part of HS as a teachers' aid, Math and drafting.
 
Why yes, yes I do have the nerve. And while I also have a personal laptop (two actually, more later about the 2nd), I do like the convenience of a desktop. In fact, I am currently posting from the desktop which is running Linux Mint.

Oh, yes, a car without power steering! I had tried to get a Driver's License using a friend's car using his Honda without a power steering in early 90s and flunked the test. Among one reason, lack of power steering to do the 'parallel parking'; the inspector sympathized with me upon failing. I was inapt anyway! Hahaha!
