PAF F-16 | Discussions

They offered not only block 72 but also supplies and upgrades as well now PAF will decide we need these news birds or not but supplies will never dried up.

Is there any reference for this? Yes they will keep giving spares for existing fleet but I doubt US has offered block 72s. However, they are offering india F-21 (block 72+ with make-in-india initiative) and F-35 (both Trump and his VP has offered it to india).

US isn't our ally. Despite Trump's recent mood swing, India is still strategic partner of US. We really don't need more american jets now. There was a time when west had absolute hegemony / monopoly on cutting edge tech. That time is gone for good.

Even if Americans offer us F16 black 70/72...
Question is can we afford them .. answer is Big NOO .. Due to prices tag and restrictions set ..

On the other PAF is getting good and advance stuff on discounted price along soft loan from China..

Pakistan May Have To Phase Out US-Supplied F-16 Fighter Aircraft Due To Engine Issues

Over the last three years, dozens of F-16’s engines have been rejected, primarily due to technical faults, wear from years of service, and a crippling shortage of spare parts

Pakistan may have to gradually phase out the US-supplied F-16 fighter aircraft—once considered the pride of Pakistani Air Force.

Pakistani F-16s are grappling with serious crises, which means in the coming years, the Pakistan Air Force will be forced to ground its entire fleet.

News18 has reliably learnt that Pakistan’s Air Force is confronting a substantial operational strain due to persistent engine reliability issues affecting its aging F-16 fleet.

The F-16s, long regarded as the backbone of the PAF’s aerial capability, depend on Pratt & Whitney F100 engines—specifically the F100-PW-200 and the F100-PW-229. Over the last three years, dozens of these engines have been rejected, primarily due to technical faults, wear from years of service, and a crippling shortage of spare parts.

The reliability crisis is compounded by the United States’ strict export controls governing the sale and supply of OEM spare parts. Recent financial difficulties have led to delayed or suspended payments owed to the US Foreign Military Sales programme, which, in turn, has halted the delivery of critical engine components and maintenance kits to Pakistan. This has pushed Pakistan’s only advanced, all-weather multirole fighter jets towards potential grounding and limited their availability for operational deployment—a severe blow to national air defence.

The core of the issue lies not only in the advanced age and wear of Pakistan’s F-16s, but also the inflexible restrictions imposed by the US, both in terms of monitoring their use and in strictly regulating the flow of replacement parts. Under the most recent US-Pakistan agreement, the F-16s are subject to close American oversight, permitted to operate only from designated bases and explicitly restricted in their role. This further aggravates the challenge of keeping the fleet airborne since any deviation or friction in this arrangement can prompt delays in logistical flows and, by extension, reduce operational readiness.

Operational consequences are serious: dozens of F-16 airframes are grounded at any time awaiting repairs or parts, eroding the PAF’s ability to maintain effective patrols or respond quickly to crises.

[Acha, ab bari ati hai JF-17 ke]

The operational gap is now sparking a greater reliance on the JF-17 Thunder, a jointly developed Sino-Pakistani combat jet. However, the JF-17, powered by Russian RD-93 engines, is also struggling with its own maintenance and spare parts issues due to sanctions on Russia and reported technical limitations, leaving it an imperfect substitute.

Ultimately, Pakistan is now caught in a strategically vulnerable position, with the operational readiness of its premier fighter force diminished by aging technology, insufficient access to spare parts, and financial as well as geopolitical hurdles. Without a reliable solution to its F-16 engine woes—either through fresh US cooperation or a viable alternative—the PAF faces an untenable strain that limits its deterrence and the flexibility crucial to its national security posture.

Now I can start to believe the F-16 upgrade rumors.
When these idiots start making up stuff to this level then they are getting really desperate.
It was the same with JF-17 Maintenance issue in Myanmar prior to Azeri deal.

GroK Saar! Prabhu! - please tell me something to write against Pakistani F-16 that will make American not sell more.

What are the approximate time frames for V upgrades...from what I have read there are multiple air forces in queue ahead already getting their aircraft upgraded like Greece, Poland, Singapore and Korea.
I don't see PAF upgrading getting underway even until 2028 or later.

Currently? No timeline because PAF hasn't ordered V-kits.

Correct...and even if they were to do so today it would not happen for a number of years. I was trying to establish an approximate timeline given what is already being done or in the pipeline.

So far Taiwan has upgraded all its Block 20s, ~140, to V standard.
Greece's 83 aircraft are being upgraded, 12/yr ... and they got the first 3 or 4 in 2023 while the initial was sent to US in 2021.
Poland hasn't started their upgrades yet. Koreans might be doing their modernization inhouse but am not sure. Turkey is up in the air.

Was reading about the super squadron experiment USAF is doing with its F-16s in Korea with 31 aircraft in one squadron and whether larger squadrons help with logistics and readiness, training, and combat power.
Made me think if something like this was studied in Pakistan in determining the effective size of squadrons. I recalled how 3 F-16s squadrons were initially operating the F-16s in the 80s and later due attrition and no additional F-16s they were consolidated in 2. Similarly we have now large Mirage 3/5 squadrons, though with legacy aircraft having much lower availability rates, it would not be a true comparison.
Current PAF squadron strength is around 18-22 aircraft for all its 4/4.5 generation fighters.

Yes they tried it sometime ago and with the centralised organisation they have for flying squadrons and wings, it wasn't feasible for the long run

Turkey can be better and economical alternative.. for upgrades..
