PAF SAM based Air Defense System - News, Discussion & Updates

This is probably not very accurate

It's from the official PAF press release. Even it doesn't give a completely accurate location of the batteries it still gives us a number.

A battery might have multiple launchers.....and am assuming radar and all are data linked already within existing PAF multi domain network.

So what it means is, there will be a lot more total launchers/trucks than no of batteries of HQ9

Those symbols likely symbolize entire batteries, also they are quite far apart being they part of different batteries

If Pakistan is considering acquiring the Chinese Type 625E air defense system with a Gatling gun and 8 missiles, Pakistan should look at some modifications.

To start this system could be excellent in terminal defense against larger supersonic enemy targets; such as the Brahmos, for which I think it is being acquired.

But the system needs support “struts” so it can be on firm footing and more accurate in its engagements.

While the following is from a detractor, it is good to look at shortcomings so they can be worked upon. Also, obviously the system should work in conjunction with other systems optimized for drones; with EW and auto cannon systems.

Also in the realm of low altitude defense against swarms of FPVs or plain recon quadcopters, Pakistan should be looking at add one onto Hilux vehicles.

Small power efficient GaN radars can find and jam some drones, while gun based systems can be directed by that radar in an unmanned way.

But there is also another technique. Considering the limitations of how much a hilux can carry, a laser designator (alone or in conjunction with other hilux based laser designator for better triangulation) can highlight the threat(s) and allow other platforms to fire small and affordable but highly accurate anti-drone drones to intercept the threat.

Here is a Chinese made laser designator, with some variants small and light enough to fit on a drone. To increase line of sight, tethered drones could be used by troops in hilux to maintain longer loitering roles with the tools to highlight threat(s).

A swarm of adequately sized racing drones with a laser seeker in the nose could so the intercepting at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated missile, and could therefore be produced to be nearly ubiquitous on the battlefield.

Finally there is also using lasers as a weapon against quadcopters. A cheap system like the following can be effective out to 300 meters and only cost $13,000.

The lesson from the Ukraine war is when thinking about high end interceptors, we can’t forget the threats that could take out those intercepts we rely upon to take on ballistic missiles and high altitude fighters.

This is not designed for Brahmos or any ballistic or cruise missile. This is a short range system for drones and other aerial targets. Consider this a close in weapon system that's decentralized and standalone, meaning it's not linked to any anti-missile system like you see HQ series or Russian S series. If enemy's Brahmos or other missiles come to this system's range, you may get ready for losses because the most area destructive warheads are usually exploded in the air.

For Brahmos or other missiles, you need a combo of HQ-9B and HQ-19. Theater ballistic missiles, high supersonic or hypersonic will be tackled by HQ-19. I am sure it will have AI to auto allocate relevant interception system.

It is derived from the CIWS on ships, intended for the terminal defense of high value targets. I agree the first line of defense will have to be systems like the HQ-19 and HQ-9B, with possibly the IRIS-T SLX or equivalent in the mid course, then HQ-17 and then finally these short range systems for anything that gets through. Pakistan may not go for a Gatling gun system like this one, there are many commentators saying Pakistan prefers a twin auto-cannon option. Let’s see what Pakistan procures.
