All lives are equal, but as an army brat I find myself particularly horrified when a fauji gets kidnapped. Doesn’t matter to me, an Indian, that the soldier is from the Pakistani army.

There is a honour and a code of conduct for faujis, and their falling into the hands of murderers and thugs feels especially worrying.

Again I don’t mean to imply in any way that civilian lives are any less; it’s just that my background and childhood exposure to the military makes me particularly sensitive.

Sometimes it’s better that the soldier dies in combat, or is prisoner to a professional army, than held at the mercy of barbarians.
