SCAR production is being shut down. Pakistan should try to buy it's production line. Even if not SCAR some other rifle needs to come
Only Scar civilian side production is closed in North America

I was both right AND wrong. Just announced:

SHOT Show is in a few days. No doubt in my mind FN will have examples there.

Meet Pakistani Army’s robot Haidar Karrar

The Pakistani Army's technological capabilities surpasses that of India, as exemplified by this indigenous robot Haider Karrar, it is equipped with a deadly 7.62mm gun. This hybrid technology robot can be deployed remotely from a ground station to target objectives at distance of up to 8 kilometers. The Haider Karrar robot has an ammunition capacity of 300 to 500 rounds.

Even that is not the case. It was a marketing tactic. They just announced launch of GEN 2.

But no takers in the US military. US Special Forces have long since moved on from SCAR to the new Sig rifles.

Pakistan should decide if money is an issue and perhaps settle on the Turkish MKEK platform. Our indigenous efforts are nothing more than an "evolution" of existing platforms. Nothing revolutionary is being designed by the POF.

If I recall correctly, 16S is 5.56 and 17S 7.62. The key question is, what is the future caliber being envisaged by the Pakistani planners.

Also, keep in mind that amongst the western suppliers, Belgians are considered fairly expensive. If Pakistan were to opt for a western system, we should simply go to the Americans and agree on something. Massive economies of scale and competition among American small-arms manufacturers may make sense.

Given the recent purchases by the UKSF of Knight's Armament Company (KAC) KS-1, Sig's deal with the Indians on the basic 7.62 platform and a brand new platform for the USSOCOM are good exmples and I think Pakistan should explore this route if domestic efforts and collaboration with Turkish/Chinese sources aren't meeting GSR.

Do you think the new Sig 6.8 rifles are going to make it cheaper to acquire the 556 platforms as they will be phased out by the marines and/or usarmy. thats if sig can iron out the issues and really implement the change

I don't know honestly. I was just suggesting that if Pakistan wants to go the way of an AR platform because ppl here keep on pushing SCAR, American companies would be better.

Honestly, the right way to approach this, IMO, is to privatize POF's small-arms plant. I doubt it's running near full capacity right now and is more of a burden on the public exchequer.

The ordnance wing should be kept under state control as it's a key defence asset (i.e., keeping ammunition control under military hands is a critical security requirement), but small arms production doesn't need to be public.

It'd be best to open the small arms production side of POF to a domestic consortium (with 49% government equity) that will think in P&Ls and ensure the product line up aligns with current and emerging market expectations.

What the armed forces/gov't can do, however, is that when they release a tender for a new rifle, they can offer part of their 49% equity as an offset. So, this way, the PA will not have to eat the upfront cost of modernizing the facilities or licensing new arms as it can sell part of its ownership within the new POF to the winner.

However, now, the winning OEM will have to partner with a network of Pakistani firms to supply the Army and engage potential export markets.

The work gets done within Pakistan, and over time, the Pakistani firms here may learn enough to branch out and set up their own small arms companies. This is pretty much how the Turks ended up with multiple small arms producers.
