BEIJING: The 2026 China International Sesame Conference (Spring), held in the coastal city of Qingdao, brought together global stakeholders from across the sesame value chain to discuss market trends, trade cooperation and future supply dynamics.

The event served as a key platform for exporters, importers and industry leaders to strengthen partnerships and explore new opportunities in the fast-growing sesame sector.

Among the notable participants was Gopal Khamuani, Chairman of Pakistan Kanwal Trading Company (Pvt) Ltd, who represented Pakistan and delivered a comprehensive presentation on the country's sesame seed market. His analysis highlighted Pakistan's rising importance as a reliable supplier to China and other international markets.

Can someone please explain to me what countries like Turkey and Iran do differently that Pakistan has thus far failed to emulate in exports? Why are we stuck in this limbo of a dwindling economy which does not show signs of ever being competitive with European countries?

Permanent Ban on export of:
1. Raw cotton
2. sugar [ eliminate Sugar Mafia, sampling us foreign exchange ]
3. Raw or Scrap Copper
4. Raw or Scrap Aluminium
5. Steel Scrap / Raw iron ore

Despite being a cotton-producing country, he said, Pakistan increasingly relies on imported cotton and synthetic fibres due to inconsistent domestic production, exposing exporters to global price shocks and currency risks.

To be competitive, they demanded local production of finished copper and aluminium with curbs on export of raw materials.

The costly Ferro Chrome is being exported in raw form from Muslim Bagh area of Baluchistan with no value addition.

May 04, 2026 (MLN): Pakistan's trade deficit surged to $4.07 billion in April 2026 its highest level since June 2022 jumping 43.5% month-on-month (MoM) from $2.84bn in March 2026, as a sharp spike in imports vastly outpaced a recovery in exports during the month.

The sharp deterioration was driven by a dramatic expansion in the import bill alongside only a modest rise in outbound shipments, according to provisional data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Exports rebound over 14pc in April

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s merchandise exports showed signs of recovery in April after two consecutive months of decline, but the trade deficit remained elevated due to a surge in imports and relatively slower growth in export proceeds.

The rebound in April exports offered some relief. However, it was not sufficient to offset the widening gap caused by higher import payments, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said on Monday.

Trade analysts say the persistent rise in imports, driven by demand for energy and industrial inputs, continues to outpace export earnings, keeping pressure on the external account.

In April, exports grew 14.03pc to $2.48 billion, compared with $2.17bn in the corresponding month last year. On a month-on-month basis, export proceeds increased by 9.5pc.

Trade deficit widens to $31.98bn in 10MFY26

Negative export growth has persisted since August of the current fiscal year, except in July, when exports grew by 16.43pc year on year. Export earnings have posted negative growth, with proceeds declining by 20.41pc in December.

This follows a 14.54pc drop in November, 4.46pc in October, 3.88pc in September, and 12.49pc in August, reflecting persistent pressures on the country’s external trade performance.

However, exports rose 3.3pc in January but contracted 8.76pc in February and 14.4pc in March.

In the 10 months (July-April), export proceeds recorded negative growth of 6.25pc, falling to $25.21bn from $26.89bn in the corresponding period last year.

Iran and Pakistan have agreed to expand port and transit cooperation, with officials saying $10 billion in bilateral trade is achievable within a few years.
The Iranian delegation from the Chabahar Free Zone, during their visits to Karachi and Gwadar, met with Pakistani officials and emphasized cooperation on ports, transit, logistics, and barter trade.

The Vice President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Nasir Khan, said that with strategic coordination and the removal of technical trade barriers, achieving $10 billion in bilateral trade within a few years is highly feasible.

During these visits, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Chabahar Free Zone and the Gwadar Port Authority, and both sides agreed to expand cooperation between Iran’s border provinces and Pakistan’s Sindh province.
