The Supreme Court did issue clear guidelines but even now, the executive often finds creative ways to defy or sidestep the judiciary, just within the limits. Until the economic situation of the masses improves, we’ll have to live with these imperfections. Still, it’s miles better than having an army general or unelected elite holding all the cards.

Not perfect, but hopefully moving in the right direction. Have we gotten better? Mostly yes. Are we where we should be? Probably not. Progress in a developing democracy isn’t a straight line, especially in a country of 1.4 billion. The Kalyan Singh case was embarrassing, no doubt. But at least it was debated in public, not buried by a uniform or silenced by force.
