ISLAMABAD: In a landmark stride towards advancing its internet and communication capabilities, Pakistan has announced plans to launch a new satellite into space, following the successful deployment of the iCube Qamar satellite.

Dubbed MM1, the new satellite is scheduled to be launched on May 30, according to a spokesperson of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco). The national space agency, Suparco, said the launch is set to take place from Islamabad.

The primary objective behind the MM1 satellite is to bolster Pakistan’s communication infrastructure. It is anticipated that the satellite will contribute to the establishment of a sophisticated communication network and has the potential to meet the growing demands of the telecom sector.

With the exponential growth in internet usage and the imminent rollout of 5G technology, the MM1 satellite holds promise in ensuring better availability and reliability of these services across the country. The satellite’s advanced capabilities are expected to address the increasing demand for high-speed internet and seamless connectivity.

On May 3, Pakistan launched its first mission to the moon, entering the international space race for research. The mission was launched with Chinese assistance from China’s Hainan Space Site. The satellite, weighing about 7kg, was developed by the Electrical Engineering Department of the Institute of Space Technology (IST) in Islamabad in two years.

Suparco launched the first satellite into lunar orbit, which was linked to the Chang’e 6 mission of China. With the launch of the mission, Pakistan became the sixth country in the world to go to the moon. On Friday, iCube Qamar made history by transmitting its first images from the moon’s orbit. The satellite successfully captured and transmitted its inaugural images from the lunar orbit, providing a unique perspective of the moon’s surface.
Hello, I usually am an observer and do not post but there seems to be no discussion on the linked article from BR regarding a new satellite Pakistan has developed and is supposedly launching from Islamabad....either this is poor reporting or Pakistan has developed satellite launch capabilities which is massive. I hope we can have an informative discussion on this.

Perhaps the NOTAM given some days ago is related to this??

KARACHI: Pakistan launched on Thursday its second communication satellite today, PAKSAT MM-1, to further improve the country's digital communication infrastructure.

The satellite was sent into orbit from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC) and will deploy at an altitude of 36,000 km above the Earth.

The five-ton satellite is equipped with the latest communication equipment. “The satellite is expected to contribute to the establishment of a sophisticated communication network and help meet the growing demands of the telecom sector,” Suparco said.

The satellite is expected to take three to four days to stabilise in its designated orbit around the Earth, a Suparco official added.

“Its advanced capabilities will address the increasing demand for high-speed internet and seamless connectivity. This high-power multi-mission satellite will provide communication services in C, Ku, Ka Bands and SBAS services in L Band.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation on the successful launch of the country's second communication satellite.

"I, along with the entire nation, am proud of our scientists achievement," said the premier.

“It will prove to be a stepping stone in the transformation of the country into digital Pakistan. It will provide various communication services like broadband internet, TV broadcasting, mobile bank hauling, and VSAT connectivity,” added the spokesperson.

The launch follows the historic ICUBE-Q launch on May 3 on board China’s Chang’E6 mission.

ICube-Qamar achieved lunar orbit at 1:14 pm Pakistan time on May 9. Following its deployment on the moon, the satellite operated according to the designated parameters.
The Chang'e 6 mission is scheduled to commence its return journey to Earth on June 4 and is expected to reach the planet on June 25.

The quest to send a lunar orbiter started in 2022 when the China National Space Agency (CNSA), through the Asia Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO), offered member states an opportunity to send a student-built payload to Earth's closest celestial neighbour onboard the Chang'e 6 mission.

Pakistan's national space agency’ Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), has announced its communication satellite, PakSAT-MM1, has reached its designated orbit.

A SUPARCO spokesperson confirmed that its second satellite, launched on May 30, has reached its geostationary orbit. "PakSAT-MM1 is now positioned at an altitude of 38,786 kilometres above the Earth," the spokesperson said.

The satellite is stationed at 38.2 degrees East. Weighing 5 tonnes, PakSAT-MM1 is equipped with state-of-the-art communication technology, which will provide high-speed internet access across the country.

"Following its deployment, the satellite's solar panels have started functioning," the spokesperson added. "Various tests will be conducted to assess the satellite's health and performance in orbit."

The launch of PakSat-MM1 marks a significant milestone for the country’s space programme, which aims to enhance the country’s communication infrastructure and reduce dependency on foreign satellites.

The satellite is expected to improve internet connectivity, especially in remote and underserved areas, supporting the country’s digital transformation initiatives.

The satellite was sent into orbit from China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center (XSLC).

This launch follows the successful deployment of Pakistan's first communication satellite, PakSAT-1R, in 2011.
