Nothing has changed in the last 19 years. Pakistan cannot plan or implement measures to safeguard its people. No proper dams or reservoirs have been built to save water, manage flooding, etc. ~20 years is a long time. We have seen this report many times every year since the end of Gen [ret] Musharraf's time. ISLAMABAD: As the monsoon intensified, heavy rains on Thursday lashed the country's upper and northern regions, causing widespread disruption.

Lahore recorded 343 millimetres of rainfall over the past 48 hours, while Gilgit-Baltistan bore the brunt of torrential downpours over the past two days. The region was further battered by cloudbursts, rapid glacial melting, and severe flooding in streams and rivers, exacerbating the impact of the extreme weather.

Moreover, the Flood Forecasting Division of the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned of rising flood risks as a strong monsoon system interacting with a westerly wave is expected to trigger widespread rainfall, rapid river inflows, flash floods in mountainous areas, hill torrents and urban flooding in vulnerable cities, prompting authorities to monitor river catchments and disaster-prone regions closely.

High flood conditions persisted at the Khanki and Qadirabad barrages on the River Chenab on Thursday, while Marala Barrage remained at medium flood level as monsoon flows continued to swell Punjab's rivers, the latest data showed.

The data showed the Chenab at Marala Barrage recorded an inflow of 194,452 cusecs and an outflow of 174,452 cusecs, maintaining a medium flood level. At Khanki Barrage, inflow reached 261,463 cusecs against an outflow of 256,063 cusecs, placing the barrage in a high flood category.

At Qadirabad Barrage, the river carried an inflow of 267,159 cusecs, while 252,159 cusecs were discharged downstream. Authorities said 15,000 cusecs of water were being diverted into the Q-B Link Canal, while high flood conditions continued at the barrage.

The Ravi River remained largely stable. At Kot Naina, the river was flowing at 17,500 cusecs, with water levels showing a declining trend. Flows at Jassar, Ravi Siphon and Shahdara were recorded at 24,940 cusecs, 32,577 cusecs and 32,138 cusecs, respectively, with conditions described as normal.

Gilgit-Baltistan

Flood torrents, landslides and falling debris have severely damaged numerous houses, link roads, three major bridges, irrigation systems, drinking water schemes and large areas of agricultural land, while ground connectivity to several areas has been cut off.

The Gilgit-Chitral Expressway has also been closed due to the rains.

On the outskirts of Gilgit city, floodwaters entered homes in Konodas, Skarkoi, Jotal and Naltar causing heavy damage to standing crops and trees.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa

At least 22 people have been killed and 23 others injured in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province since July 19 as heavy monsoon rains and flash floods triggered house collapses and swept away people, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said on Thursday.

Chenab flood level eases from medium to low; PMD forecasts more rain in upper parts of Punjab from July 29​

Chenab continued to witness flooding on Sunday, but with flow eased from medium to low, as the Met Office forecast a fresh rainfall spell from July 29 in the upper catchments of all major rivers, as well as Islamabad, upper Punjab and northern parts of the country.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab said in a statement issued on Sunday morning that while the rivers in the province continued to flood due to rain, the flow in the waterways had remained stable in the past 24 hours.

It added that there was low-level flooding in the Indus River at Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa waterworks, with water flow being recorded at 334,000 cusecs at Kalabagh, 370,000 cusecs at Chashma and 313,000 cusecs at Taunsa around 6am.

In the Chenab River, the flooding situation was subsiding, reaching a low-level flood at Marala, Khanki, Qadirabad, and Trimmu barrages, the authority added. At Marala, the water flow was 143,000 cusecs, 138,000 cusecs at Khanki, 135,000 cusecs at Qadirabad, and 184,000 cusecs at Trimmu as of 6am, the PDMA said.

A low-level flood also persisted in the Ravi River at the Balloki and Sidhnai headworks, with 81,000 cusecs at Balloki and 60,000 cusecs at Sidhnai, it said, adding that the water flow at Shahdara in the Ravi River remained normal.

Water flow in Sutlej and Jhelum rivers was also at normal levels, it said.

DMA said that 115mm of rain was recorded in Noorpur Thal, 107mm in Gujranwala, 94mm in Gujrat, 68mm in Narowal, 65mm in Mandi Bahauddin, 52mm in Sialkot Airport, 46mm in Okara, 40mm in Jauharabad and 38mm in Sargodha during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Lahore received 37mm of rainfall, Mangla 37mm, Jhelum 32mm, Sheikhupura 28mm, Hafizabad and Kasur 27 mm, Chakwal 20mm, Bahawalnagar 18mm and Khanewal 16 mm, the spokesperson said.

“A total of 450 mm of rain was recorded in Lahore over a period of 5 days,” the statement said, adding that Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Attock, Murree and Bahawalpur also received rainfall.

According to the statement, PMDA’s control room and district emergency operation centres remain on high alert.

It also raised caution regarding the risk of flooding in rivers and canals in low-lying areas due to rain, as well as landslides in mountainous areas such as Murree. Heavy rain may also damage mud-brick houses, it added.
