Climate change is ‘new normal’ but can be managed: Ahsan Iqbal

“Climate change will occur; this is the new normal, but it is not unmanageable,” Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has said.

“We must identify the gaps in our infrastructure,” he said, claiming that India has “splendid dykes and sends all its water towards us”.

Iqbal noted that Narowal was on the frontline as there were various streams coming there. He urged the prime minister to declare Narowal as a disaster-hit district so the appropriate relief could be provided to the affected people.

NDMA chairman highlights 3 weather systems in play simultaneously

Briefing the premier, the NDMA chief noted Glofs and cloudbursts in the northern areas, as well as urban inundation in Karachi.

“This time’s monsoon was predicted to occur in Punjab’s northern areas and lower areas of GB, AJK and KP.

“In this spell, it has happened for the first time that the systems coming from the Bay of Bengal, another developing from the west, and from the Arabian Sea, have shown a collective effect,” he pointed out.

The NDMA chairman added that all these weather systems accumulated in the country’s northern areas and north Punjab.

A few things need to happen.

Firstly massive drainage areas need to be built underground to take this water. This means larger stormwater drains, underground tunnels, and pumping stations. Also build artificial lakes, ponds, or basins that temporarily store stormwater and release it slowly.

Look at example such as;

Tokyo, Japan They constructed the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel (MAOUDC) — a massive underground floodwater storage system with cathedral-like chambers to hold stormwater before pumping it out.

Rotterdam, Netherlands Known for their “sponge city” design. Uses water plazas (public squares that double as reservoirs during heavy rain).

Secondly there needs to be a colossal effort to replant tress and grass. Our people stupidly burn and cut away nature's natural defences to make way for building projects and the water can go no where. Restore the natural waterways and plant urban forests.

Also start to build dams! When was the last time one was built in the heartlands of Punjab? Oh never mind....

The above can only happen with a competent government, good luck with the Sharif family in charge.

Shahdara also faces ‘exceptionally high’ flood now, along with Chenab and Sutlej

Chenab River at the Qadirabad and Khanki headworks, Ravi River at Shahdara, and Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala are in an “exceptionally high flood” condition.

Shahdara Headworks on Ravi, which had “very high” flood hours ago, was now facing extreme flooding with “rising” outflows of over 185,000 cusecs, according to the latest data by the Met Office’s Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) updated at 12pm.

The water outflows at Qadirabad were recorded at over 800,000 cusecs, while the outflows at Khanki were over 620,000 cusecs, with the flows at both points falling.

Jassar and Balloki headworks on Ravi were facing a “high” flood level, while Marala on Chenab and Suleimanki on Sutlej were witnessing a “medium” flood.

Irsa ‘turns off’ tap at Tarbela as Sindh prepares for surge

As Sindh anticipates a very high flood between Sept 1 and 3 at Guddu Barrage — its first barrage on the Indus River — due to the swollen eastern rivers currently wreaking havoc in Punjab, the downstream province has asked the authorities to reduce outflows from Tarbela Dam to help it manage the deluge.

As multiple rivers submerge Punjab, Sindh has reached out to the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) to reduce outflows from Tarbela and retain water at Chashma Barrage — a request accepted by the authority.

“Yes, we have reduced flows from Tarbela (at Sindh’s request), where 155,000 cusecs outflow was recorded at 8pm Wednesday,” Irsa Director of Operations Khalid Idrees Rana told Dawn.

He also confirmed that “storage can be taken slightly higher than maximum storage of 1,550 feet. We can take it to 1550.2 or 1550.3 feet for now,” he argued.

Whom to believe for this flood news, electronic media is showing as this flood is the more bigger than 2010 flood! and what should a normal citizen do in this situation or track the flood?

ISLAMABAD: At least two military personnel embraced martyrdom, while two others were injured during relief activities, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said on Wednesday.

Addressing a joint press conference with Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) chief Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, Gen Chaudhry said flood response units had already been mobilised in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

He said that around 28,000 people had been rescued during the operations.

NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Malik said that nearly 210,000 people had been safely evacuated from flood-affected regions, with no casualties reported.

Lt Gen Malik said new rainfall was forecast between Aug 29 and Sept 9, especially in catchment areas already inundated. Authorities in Punjab, KP, AJK and GB had been alerted, while downstream water flows were being monitored at Panjnad, Kotri and Guddu. Panjnad is expected to see a surge of 600,000 to 700,000 cusecs in the coming days.

The ISPR chief stressed that despite floods near the working boundary, army posts remained manned with “strict vigilance”, and none had been abandoned. He confirmed that two personnel had embraced martyrdom and two others sustained injuries during the relief efforts.

The military has established 29 medical camps in Punjab, KP, GB and AJK, providing treatment to over 20,700 people and distributing 225 tonnes of rations.

The govt has utterly failed in mitigating or proper planning for flood management
they fight and bicker over building dams and then this happens
the poor common people again have to face their entire lives washed away due to this and won't receive any help at all.

but let the CORRUPT ASSHOLES in judiciary, parliament, GHQ, and bureaucrcy enjoy unlimited benefits and perks while the agriculture/food sinks in floods.

We need a major big war to wipe these corrupt assholes out of Pak for good. No other way remains to get rid of these corrupt bastard leeches

Everyone knows we need dams and reservoir's, artificial lakes for water to be drained into
Storm drains and canals so water can be diverted to areas where we have water issues

Every time we need to discuss building, some paindu comes up with some sort of dumb **** reason to halt the project, mostly is some Inane ethnic dumbfukkery

If we can pass 26 amendment, lost eastern wing, make mockery of judiciary, etc.. then the dams etc could be build. It is just not a priority for anybody.

Causes too much problems, it takes years of preparation and allocation.of resources, building work and that can't be done without agreement from all involved especially at provincial level

If certain provinces want to make a issue of it and start a song and dance, then it's been too much hassle to force these projects through
