Daducha Dam project gets go-ahead

RAWALPINDI: The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) has approved a Rs36 billion PC-I for the Daducha Dam Water Supply Project, aimed at providing an additional 35 million gallons of water per day to Rawalpindi city and the cantonment.
The project involves bringing water from Daducha Dam through a 28-kilometre pipeline, installing water filtration plants and developing a water supply distribution network between the city and cantonment areas.
The total project cost of Rs36b has been divided equally between Rawalpindi city and the cantonment, with each allocated Rs18b on an equal-sharing basis.
However, a decision on whether the Rs18b share for the cantonment will be borne by the federal government or by the Punjab government will be taken by the provincial cabinet.
The cabinet will also determine the final allocation of the additional 35 million gallons of water per day between Rawalpindi city and the cantonment.
The construction of Daducha Dam is currently under way under the Punjab Irrigation Department, while the network for transporting water from the dam will be developed by the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA).
The project is expected to provide much-needed relief to residents of Rawalpindi and the cantonment, which are currently facing a severe water shortage.

Punjab CM arrives in China, seeks more cooperation

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday had a meeting with Chen Xiaojiang, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation in agriculture, irrigation, livestock and other sectors.
Chen Xiaojiang warmly welcomed the chief minister, who thanked him for the warm reception. The meeting was also attended by CPC Xinjiang Uygur Deputy Secretary He Zhongyu, Head of the Publicity Department Wang Jinzhen, Executive Vice Governor of Xinjiang Uygur Zhang Yingchen and Provincial Deputy Secretary-General of the CPC Li Qiyong.
According to a message received here, the two sides agreed to promote partnership in agriculture, irrigation and livestock sectors. They also agreed on adopting advanced aerial vehicles, modern water levelling techniques and digital crop monitoring systems to promote agriculture.

Punjab Expands Electric Bus Service to Tehsil Level

Chairing a meeting in Lahore, the chief minister approved the deployment of 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils. Dedicated depots for the buses in each tehsil have also been approved.
The first batch of buses for the tehsil-level service is expected to arrive in Lahore in January 2027. The provincial government aims to have 3,000 electric buses operating across Punjab by June 2027, while the first phase of the electric bus service is targeted for completion by September.
Under the expansion plan, 169 buses will serve nine tehsils of Multan, while 87 buses will be deployed across four tehsils of Sahiwal.
Dera Ghazi Khan will receive 63 buses, while 215 buses will serve 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur. Faisalabad’s 12 tehsils will receive 202 buses, while another 198 buses will operate across 14 tehsils of Sargodha.
According to the government, 612 electric buses are already fully operational in different districts and are benefiting millions of residents each day.
Another 192 buses in Multan and other districts are expected to become operational within the next few days.
The chief minister has also approved additional electric buses for Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Attock.
Okara, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat, and Sheikhupura will also receive additional buses as part of the expansion.
The initiative is aimed at improving public transport facilities and providing residents across Punjab with cleaner and more sustainable commuting options.
Meanwhile, the government said work on the Faisalabad and Gujranwala mass transit systems is progressing rapidly.
Construction and rehabilitation work is also underway at 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service.
