Ranked: The World’s Best Cities for Quality of Life in 2026

Which Cities Have the Best Quality of Life in 2026?

View attachment 219722

Key Takeaways

  • Canberra ranks first globally for quality of life, ahead of Bergen and Singapore.
  • Europe accounts for 23 of the top 30 cities, with particularly strong showings from Germany and Switzerland.
  • Only two U.S. cities make the top 30: San Jose at 13th and Seattle at 22nd
What makes a city one of the best places in the world to live? High incomes, affordable housing, safety, and access to recreation all play a role.

This graphic ranks the world’s leading cities for quality of life using data from Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index, which evaluates 1,000 cities worldwide. Its Quality of Life category measures income equality, income per person, housing expenditure, life expectancy, crime, and access to recreation and cultural sites.

Why Canberra Ranks First for Quality of Life

Canberra earns a perfect index score of 100, making it the highest-ranked city for Quality of Life in 2026. Oxford Economics attributes its performance to a combination of high salaries and relatively low income inequality, supported by the Australian capital’s concentration of stable, well-paying government jobs.

Canberra also performs well on life expectancy and benefits from a high number of recreation and cultural sites relative to its population. Interestingly, Canberra ranks only 45th in the overall Global Cities Index, showing how a city can excel in quality of life without ranking among the world’s top cities overall.

By region, Europe dominates the ranking, led by Bergen, Grenoble, Bern, and Oslo.

Germany has an especially strong showing, with Dresden, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, and Freiburg im Breisgau all appearing in the top 21. Switzerland places three cities in the top 14: Bern, Basel, and Zurich. Italy also contributes three cities to the top 30, including Venice, Padua, and Genoa.

Outside Europe, the leading cities include Canberra and Sydney in Australia, Singapore, San Jose and Seattle in the United States, and Hsinchu and Taipei in Taiwan.

How U.S. Cities Perform

The United States dominates several measures of global city competitiveness, but its performance in quality of life tells a different story.

According to Oxford Economics, U.S. cities generally excel in Economics and Human Capital, while European cities tend to perform better in Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance.

New York, for example, ranks 1st overall but 86th for Quality of Life. Oxford Economics notes that high housing costs weigh on the city’s score, even as New York benefits from high incomes and strong access to recreation and cultural sites.

Why Some Cities Don’t Make the List

Some cities commonly associated with high livability fall outside the top 30, largely because of housing costs.

Copenhagen, for instance, ranks 18th overall but 160th for Quality of Life, with Oxford Economics pointing to limited and expensive housing as the main drag. The city performs much better in Governance, where it ranks first globally, as well as Environment and Economics.

Vancouver shows a similar gap, ranking 24th overall but 215th for Quality of Life. Exceptionally high housing expenditure weighs on its score despite its outdoor amenities and long life expectancy.
Quality of life, lol, who rated them? those European cities don't even have air conditioners in hot summer days.

Madrid also very very good, both cities have very different vibes, love them both. Also love the attitude of Spanish people in general

Definitely the friendly vibe in Spain is much better than France or Italy

I stayed at one of the 2 premium suites at the W with the large outdoor overhanging deck with Jacuzzi.

Just walking around the city was a pleasure.

Bergen? It wont be in winter.

Can a city have "quality of life" ignoring average weather? How? Living closed inside house?

Unlike France or Italy, Barcelona has separatists nutjobs, few, but very noisy.

You can see graffiti against tourists in some places of Barcelona, is that friendly? They answer in Catalonian knowing Spanish if you talk to them in Spanish and so on... They are crazy, but fortunately they are few.

Building, beachs, mountain.. are more nice in Barcelona than in Madrid.
But people are more sane in Madrid than in Barcelona.

Although right now, there are protests in downtown of both cities.

So called quality of life is very subjective varying from person to person, Europe's economy is going downward fast, but the still live in their own fantasy that their quality of life is top notch.

Everybody I dealt with was friendly and spoke enough English. We didn't even bother bringing any translation stuff to Europe and simply just winged it...and no I wasn't some loud tourist speaking fast in long paragraphs wondering why the locals weren't understanding anything I said.

Honestly I never had an issue anywhere. I think the only time I caused confusion was when my brother asked me to buy a t-shirt at the Hard Rock Cafe for his collection and I had this back and forth on the phone with him (while he is back in the US) and the clerk trying to explain what the t-shirt looked like since it was not on display. That's the only time I realized people don't speak English as a first language.

Yes, I picked up your classic plain shirt. Happy now? What are brothers for...you lucky sh*t i had to go to the second store a few miles away since the first one had none in your size..you were sooooo lucky Barcelona is a great place to walk around and explore as I was in such a good mood.

Public services like public health system, good public transport, and almost free education until university still works.

The problem in south Europe is jobs, salaries, and housing prices.

Once could say the same for Islamabad actually....
I don't know about Islamabad.

But Canberra was founded based on the Federation of Australia. They didn't know where to put the Capital City and its Parliament; they couldn't choose between Sydney and Melbourne, so they make it halfway in between and put it there........

That's where the problems lie, a broken economy tries to sustain the impossibility.

Venice is not good. Just a ripoff. Few cities I have been to in Europe, of all I think Munich is ok.
