Ranked: The World’s Most and Least Free Countries

What’s a dirty job? You sound arrogant and uneducated. Vietnamese live and work in hundreds thousands in Germany, France and other places in Europe. As said you live in a bubble.
For Vietnamese the difference you want matters a lot - because almost all Vietnamese in Germany today are counted as immigrants, not temporary migrants.

In German stats:

  • Immigrant / Migrationshintergrund = settled. Includes the old boat-people in West Germany, the Vertragsarbeiter from the GDR, and their children born in Germany. That is 226,000 people of Vietnamese descent in 2024, with 141,000 of those first-generation migrants. Of that, over 100,000 are Vietnamese nationals. Total population with Vietnamese background is 227,000.
  • Migrant worker (not immigrant) = temporary, posted, seasonal, or vocational trainee who is not planning permanent residence. Different legal regime than regular migrants.
For Vietnamese, the second group is very small compared to Poles, Romanians, Bulgarians.
If you cannot differentiate between migrants and immigrants, better not quote me just for the sake of quoting.

You are a grammar nazi or what?
That is not a grammar issue. They are two completely different groups. Your argument is based on stupidity, and on top of that, sheer ignorance. You want to import people from third-world countries to do those dirty jobs for you, yet even ordinary citizens from those countries do not want to go there. What a privileged way of thinking and living, to believe you can just pick anyone you like to do those jobs for you.

Yes USA has a gun problem. Too many school shootings and mass shootings. lol.

America is a crazy country. Far more Americans die from gun violence at home than US troops die fighting in wars overseas...

I don’t want to talk with dumb kids.

I hope those freedom loving gun people in Yemen or elsewhere don’t come to Denmark. They will burn Copenhagen to the ground like we seeing now in France.
Freedom means nothing without laws and order. Uncontrolled immigration destroys countries. Marcon is helpless. Europe now pays the price. That’s a big warning for Japan, Korea, China and other.

Here's what the stupidity and sheer ignorance look like.

You are the one living in a bubble. @Lulldapull, are Vietnamese migrant workers in Japan actually seen as troublesome or not? Are they hated by the Japanese media or not? Are they among the groups committing the most crime in Japan, if not the worst one?

And you should hang around a little longer to see your stupid bubble burst.
@Lulldapull can you post some statistics like you did the other day? This guy is living in a weird bubble and somehow thinks he is not.

Also, the US holds the largest total prison population in the world, with nearly 2 million people incarcerated across state and federal prisons, local jails, and other facilities. [1, 2, 3, 4]. The U.S. makes up roughly 5% of the global population but holds about 20% of the world's prisoners. [1]. The U.S. prisoner rate is roughly 542 to 608 per 100,000 residents, placing it among the highest per-capita incarceration rates globally (surpassed nationally only by countries like El Salvador, Cuba, and Turkmenistan. Talk of the leader of the free world.

Looks like the US has earned another #1 title: the absolute freedom to get locked up!... 😆

Interesting, a dumb Viet kid seeks help from a foreign guy to look for stats to badmouth Vietnamese.

Which Countries Have the Most and Least Freedom?

View attachment 219754

Key Takeaways

  • Denmark ranks as the world’s freest country, scoring 93.7 out of 100.
  • Nine of the world’s 10 freest countries are in Europe, with Australia the only exception.
  • The U.S. fell 15 places to 37th globally, recording one of the world’s largest annual declines in freedom.

Political freedom has been declining globally for more than a decade, raising questions about the strength of democratic institutions and individual rights, even in advanced economies.

This visualization ranks 171 countries using the Atlantic Council’s 2026 Freedom Index, which measures the freedom to participate in politics, own property, and live under fair and predictable laws. Scores reflect conditions in 2025.

Where Freedom Is Strongest

Luxembourg (91.8) and Sweden (91.5) follow Denmark at the top of the index. Just 3.6 points separate the world’s 10 freest countries, highlighting how closely clustered the leading nations are.

Several Asian economies have also moved up the rankings. South Korea climbed from 33rd to 25th, recovering some of the ground lost during its recent political crisis. Japan advanced from 18th to 14th.

Freedom also carries economic implications. According to Atlantic Council research, countries undergoing democratization see GDP per capita rise by 8.8% over 20 years, on average, relative to autocratic peers.

Where Freedom Is Most Restricted

Afghanistan ranks last with a score of 19.0, followed by Turkmenistan (24.3). Many of the lowest-ranked countries face longstanding authoritarian rule, conflict, or fragile institutions.
China ranks 147th globally, alongside Guinea and DR Congo, despite having the world’s second-largest economy. Its freedom score fell from 42.9 in 2024 to 41.7 in 2025, highlighting the contrast between its economic influence and restrictions on individual freedoms.

Russia ranks 154th, with its freedom score falling from 47.3 in 2019 to 39.2 in 2025. The 8.1-point decline reflects growing restrictions on political opposition, independent media, and public dissent, particularly since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

America’s Eroding Freedoms

The United States has a freedom score of 79.9, ranking behind Canada (19th), the UK (20th), and Japan (14th). Its decline from 22nd to 37th represents one of the largest annual drops in the index.

Other measures point to a longer-term trend. In 2025, America’s democracy score fell to its lowest level since 1965.

The U.S. decline illustrates how even established democracies can experience setbacks in political rights and institutional safeguards.

Interesting, a dumb Viet kid seeks help from a foreign guy to look for stats to badmouth Vietnamese.
I can post the stats myself but you would just call it a bubble. Someone living in a bubble like you should be lectured by someone who actually lives in Japan. And you are not Vietnamese either, my guy.

I give you a friendly advice. You are known for posting bad things on Vietnam. You should watch out the police.

You should worry about your own stupidity first. And since when is talking about crimes committed by Vietnamese migrant workers in Japan a crime? Vietnamese news outlets report on them all the time. I guess a fake Vietnamese like you, searching for Vietnamese news through Google and YouTube, cannot quite grasp that.

You are just a dumb kid. About 700,000 Vietnamese officially live in Japan, of course there are criminals among them. The real number probably goes over 1 million. You expect me to post their crime list on a Pakistan defense forum? Nobody is interested of that. Accept you.
