JAKARTA, April 15 — Indonesian animated film Jumbo has become the highest-grossing South-east Asian animation in history, earning over US$8 million (RM35 million) at the Indonesian box office since its release on March 31.

Produced by Visinema Studios, the film has surpassed Malaysia’s Mechamato Movie, which previously held the regional record with approximately US$7.68 million in 2022, according to entertainment news website Deadline.

Jumbo has drawn over 3.2 million admissions to date, with nearly a million viewers recorded between April 12 and 13 alone.

This milestone also makes Jumbo Indonesia’s second-highest-grossing animated title, overtaking Moana 2, which garnered 3.1 million admissions after its November 2024 release.

The story follows Don, an orphan nicknamed “Jumbo” because of his size, who discovers a magical storybook inherited from his parents.

His adventure begins when he meets Meri, a fairy seeking to reunite with her family.

Directed by Ryan Adriandhy and co-written with Widya Arifianti, the film features a voice cast led by Indonesian singer Ariel, alongside Prince Poetiray, Muhammad Adhiyat, Graciella Abigail, Yusuf Ozkan, and Quinn Salman.

Work on the film started in early 2020.

Jumbo is my personal calling — a labor of love for my child, and for all Indonesian children who deserve to have their own choices at the cinema’s ticket box,” said founder and group CEO of Visinema, Angga Dwimas Sasongko.

“They have the right to see their own stories on screen, told in their own language, and to feel proud of who they are, because they are the future of the cinema we all cherish.”

Visinema Studios is preparing Jumbo for global distribution, with rights for major territories including China, North America, Europe, and Australia still available.

“This is no longer just our film, it’s a collective achievement,” said Angga.

“One that proves South-east Asian animation has the power to grow, to travel, and to unite.”

The film was developed over five years by a team of over 420 Indonesian artists and animators, representing a significant milestone for the country’s creative industries.

Visinema noted that Jumbo’s success is particularly noteworthy in Indonesia’s horror-heavy film market, praising its cross-generational appeal and warm storytelling.

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia --

Jumbo finally broke the number 7 million viewers on Saturday (26/4) night, which at the same time held the animated film as the third best-selling Indonesian film in the history of Indonesian cinema.

The achievement at once made the film Warkop DKI Reborn: Cricket Boss! Part 1 (2016) must be willing to drop one rank to fourth with a gain of 6,858,616 spectators.

Now as of April 26, 2024, the top three highest-grossing Indonesian films of all time are filled by KKN in the village of Penari (2022) with 10,061,033 in the first number, then Agaak Laen (2024) with 9,125,188 at number two, and Jumbo (2025) with 7,000,000 in position three.

With the acquisition of 7 million spectators, Jumbo is predicted to have pocketed a box office figure of more than Rp287 billion if one ticket is pegged at Rp41 thousand.

"Just like Don who did not expect that fairy tales and songs from his parents could bring him to a big adventure, we also never expected your welcome can be this warm," said Visinema as a Jumbo production house in his post on Saturday (26/4).

Jumbo still has the opportunity to continue to add to the coffers of the audience, although to reach Agile Laen and KKN in the village of Penari seems to be more difficult.

That’s because the film aired since Lebaran 2025 it took at least 2.2 million viewers to catch up with Agile Laen, so it would take at least 3 more weeks for this film to reach that figure.

On the other hand, Jumbo will be dealing with a series of new films, such as The Accountant 2 starring Jon Bernthal and Ben Affleck, Thunderbolts* starring Florence Pugh and Stan Stan.

Jumbo tells the story of Don, an orphan who is often disturbed because of his large body. It has a storybook that his parents inherited, which is full of pictures and magical stories.

Don then meets Meri, a fairy who seeks his help to reunite Meri with his family.

In the midst of the box office, Jumbo is preparing for its global launch, with distribution rights for several key regions, including China, North America, Western Europe, and Australia is currently still available.

The film began in early 2020. The film is directed by Ryan Adriandhy, who wrote the screenplay with Widya Arifianti.

The Indonesian zombie film Abadi Nan Jaya, internationally titled The Elixir, has taken the top spot on Netflix’s global non-English film chart just days after its premiere on October 23.

According to Variety (Friday, October 31), the film drew over 11 million viewers within its first week of release.

During the tracking period of October 20–26, the Kimo Stamboel–directed film ranked No. 1 in five countries and made it into the Top 10 most-watched films in 75 regions across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

The movie has seen huge viewership in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Germany, France, South Africa, Turkey, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and Brazil.

Since its release, Abadi Nan Jaya has received an enthusiastic response from both Indonesian and international audiences, who praised the film’s unique approach to the zombie genre with a distinct Indonesian flavor.

Led by director Kimo Stamboel, the creative team combined elements of Indonesian culture, original zombie design, and high production quality to craft a story that feels fresh and authentic.

A Story Rooted in Javanese Tradition

Abadi Nan Jaya is set in a remote village near Yogyakarta, home to a family that owns a famous herbal medicine (jamu) business.

The patriarch’s obsession with power and eternal youth leads to family conflict and an unexpected zombie outbreak.

The screenplay was written by Kimo Stamboel, Khalid Kashogi, and Agasyah Karim, with Edwin Nazir serving as producer.

“I wanted to create a zombie film that feels truly Indonesian — not just through the setting or language, but through the very heart of the story,” said Kimo Stamboel.
“From jamu and Javanese villages to the dynamics of family life — seeing audiences from different countries connect with it shows that local stories can have global resonance.”

Star-Studded Cast and Global Praise

The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, Donny Damara, Dimas Anggara, Marthino Lio, and Kiki Narendra.

“I never imagined that a story so close to our daily lives — about family, ambition, and loss — would be received so warmly both at home and abroad,” said Eva Celia.
Abadi Nan Jaya may feature zombies, but at its core, it’s about family and humanity. For me, it’s been an unforgettable experience to bring a story rooted in Indonesian culture to global audiences and witness their enthusiastic response.”

Abadi Nan Jaya (The Elixir) is now streaming on Netflix.
