Twenty four years ago, my friend Tracy, executive director of Deaf Options, asked me to set up a meeting at Detroit's Department of Human Rights where I was working at the time.
Her uncle, a black deaf man was gunned down by the Detroit police in his yard a few years prior. He didn't even know the police was behind him while raking his lawn. Turning around with a rake in his hands, officers shot him down in a hail of bullets.
Part of the settlement, a million or two was set aside to educate the police department and other city officials about the deaf.
Before the meeting, Tracy pulled me aside and told me what she was up to. We were all to wear ear plugs for just ten minutes, just hear nothing but silence. Gave me a wink, told me hearing people will start to go nuts after just five minutes of total silence.
Right on cue, after five, six minutes, we enjoyed watching top city executives looking at their watches, to see when the ten minutes of total silence was up.
A week before, told Tracy how I was being treated at work, discriminated against, because of my deafness. The unnecessary meanness and bullying, etc.
Tracy used her clout to force city bosses, even an executive city attorney to stand in front of me and try to be in my shoes for just ten minutes. After the ten minutes was up, the executives quickly went to their individual offices and closed their doors.
LOL! That was better than filing a discrimination complaint through the union!
